Talk Politely To OS X 10.9 And Siri Might Just Respond

The next iteration of the Mac operating system, OS X 10.9, will apparently be kitted out with a Mac version of Siri as well as built in Apple Maps functionality, according to a new rumor from 9to5Mac. The site suggests that some early builds of OS X 10.9 have Siri integrated into the OS although the report is careful to point out that it may not make it into later builds of the software. Voice dictation has been available on the Mac for some time now, ever since 10.8 Mountain Lion was released, with voice dictation baked in, but with Siri, your Mac would start talking back.

The first glimpse of OS X 10.9 was seen a few weeks back when several sites starting showing reporting increased incidences of Macs running OS X 10.9 showing up in their analytics. Apple has not yet released any details about the next gen operating system, but Apple will likely offer a preview or two of the new OS at some point next year.

Siri Is Still In Beta…No Really

When iOS 6 was released, many people expected that Siri would be moved into the mainstream as a major feature of the new operating system i.e. taken out of beta. Well, Apple is indeed touting Siri as a major new feature in the iOS 6 operating system (for iPad 3 at least), but are still using the safety net of a ‘beta’ tag. Much in the way that Google kept Gmail in beta for more than five years, could Siri be going down a similar route?

Apple today updated the Siri webpage with some clarification text. “Siri is available in Beta only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad (3rd generation), and iPod touch (5th generation)” Siri arrived, in beta, when the iPhone 4S was launched midway through October 2011, and received a significant update with iOS 6 when it gained the ability to offer up sports scores, movies, restaurants, the capacity to launch apps and offer directions, and tight integration with Facebook and Twitter. Should it still be in beta now?

Rumor: iOS 6 Will Bring Siri To The iPad

Apple is planning to bring Siri to the iPad with the release of iOS 6, according to a new rumor from 9to5Mac. The report is suggesting that the biggest feature on the iPhone 4S will be unleashed upon the iPad when iOS 6 is released, something that is expected to take place later this year. According to the sources that provided the information, the fact that the iPad is held further away from the mouth is not expected to cause any problems with the voice recognition, and the software works just as well on the iPad as it does on the iPhone 4S.

The report suggests that the new version of Siri will not be a full screen application, but will rather pop up in a window from the bottom of the scren when the Home button is held down. Other than that, the interface is expected to be the same as the one found on the iPhone 4S, expect for the fact that it runs in a window.

Rumor: iOS 5.1 Brings More Complex Functionality To Siri

According to some new information coming via German site Macerkopf, Siri is going to be getting some additional functionality when iOS 5.1 is released. The new functionality is reportedly bringing some additional functionality to the highly touted Siri feature of the iPhone 4S, apparently bringing more Siri extensions that will include ‘take a picture, make a video and switch on/off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth’.

Naturally, Apple will be bringing more and more features to Siri as it moves out of beta and towards a full stable public release. It’s not clear what the timeline for this sort of release is, but you can safely expect each significant improvements to the software with each new iOS release.
