Apple Releases iWork Update For iOS And Mac

Apple has just released a substantial update for iWork for both the Mac and the iOS versions of Pages, Number and Keynote. The update brings iWork up to version 9.3 on the Mac, and version 1.7 on iOS devices. The majority of the changes are bug fixes and tweaks, rather than entirely new features, or an entirely new version like, gasp… iWork’13.

There are a few notable improvements in the updates such as the ability to add reflections to objects and shapes, as well as improved track changes options that are compatible with both Pages and with Microsoft Word. There are also several new slide transition themes in Keynote and the ability to lock and unlock objects.

Apple has today seeded Developers with the first beta version of the next update for OS X Mountain Lion, version 10.8.3. Talk Politely To OS X 10.9 And Siri Might Just Respond

The next iteration of the Mac operating system, OS X 10.9, will apparently be kitted out with a Mac version of Siri as well as built in Apple Maps functionality, according to a new rumor from 9to5Mac. The site suggests that some early builds of OS X 10.9 have Siri integrated into the OS although the report is careful to point out that it may not make it into later builds of the software. Voice dictation has been available on the Mac for some time now, ever since 10.8 Mountain Lion was released, with voice dictation baked in, but with Siri, your Mac would start talking back.

The first glimpse of OS X 10.9 was seen a few weeks back when several sites starting showing reporting increased incidences of Macs running OS X 10.9 showing up in their analytics. Apple has not yet released any details about the next gen operating system, but Apple will likely offer a preview or two of the new OS at some point next year.

Messages App For OS X Will Be Mountain Lion Only After December 14

Apple has contacted OS X 10.7 Lion users to note that they will be pulling the iMessages client for Macs after December 14th, and that those that are still using 10.7 Lion will need to upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion if they still wish to continue using the Messages application (via MacRumors). The Messages app on Macs running Lion was actually still in Beta running as a preview, and since Mountain Lion is required for the full, non-beta version of the application, it offers users the perfect excuse to upgrade to the latest OS.

While the removal of Messages on Lion system was known about, there was no clear timeline for when it was going to take place. Some expected it to run until OS X 10.9 was released but obviously Apple is looking toward an earlier shutdown. This could have some impact on customers who own Macs that are not supported by 10.8 Mountain Lion, and they will likely have to rely on iOS devices to continue using iMessages.

Clear App For Mac Is Released (For Busy, Wealthy People)

A new version of the popular, gesture-driven list app for iOS devices, Clear, was released for OS X devices today by developers RealMac Software. The app is priced at an introductory price of $6.99 for today only, but then rising to an eventual price of $14.99. Clear for Mac looks, unsurprisingly, a lot like Clear for iPhone, except that it opened in a small window rather than in a full screen mode.

The crux of the app is that as long as you have a trackpad, you’ll be fine. The user interface works like the iOS version with two finger swiping controlling most of the action. You can use a mouse if you want but it kind of defeats the entire reasoning behind the user interface design. The app will sync over iCloud with your iOS devices so your lists will always be up to date.

OS X 10.9 Makes A First Appearance

The next iteration of the OS X operating system, OS X 10.9, has made its first appearance in analytics logs of several sites around the web. First spotted by 9to5Mac, and LetemSvetemApplem, the as-yet-unreleased operating system for the Mac is apparently being sporadically used within the Apple campus in California.

It’s notable that it is indeed possible to fake the version number of the operating system, but there’s essentially no evidence to suggest either way in this instance. In any case, it would seem pretty likely that Apple is indeed well into testing the new operating system, particularly as similar results were found with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion prior to its release during the OS X 10.7 Lion life cycle.

Apple Pulls Safari 6 From Software Update And Direct Download

Shortly after the release of Safari update 6.0.2 on the Mac App Store, Apple has apparently pulled the update from the Mac App Store, and Safari 6 entirely from the Downloads section of their support website. Confusingly, Safari 6 is no longer visible as a direct download on the Apple website and users, including myself, who try to download the update from the Mac App Store are met with an error message or a non-responsive download.

It’s not clear why the company have chosen to remove the entire Safari 6 downloads section, as many users will have already downloaded the latest update and installed it.  Additionally, the update is not showing up in the Apple security document that users are directed to read as part of the update process.

The popular UI driven list manager, Clear, released on iOS devices in February will apparently be arriving on the Mac next week, when it is released on to the Mac App Store on November 8. According to the developers of the Clear app, RealMac Software, the new app will be priced at $14.99 and will feature a completely new and “revolutionary gestural interface built for your trackpad”.

The Clear task manager for Mac will also feature syncing with iCloud functionality built in, meaning that you can manage your lists on both iOS and OS X. Pocket App For Mac Is Unleashed…And It’s Awesome

In a wonderfully pleasant turn of events today, Pocket (formerly ReaditLater) released a native app for OS X devices on the Mac App Store. The app, essentially a digital bulletinboard for your Mac, does all the same things that the wonderful iOS app and web app does. It allows you to save articles for later offline reading, and will sync with your iOS devices and the web interface seamlessly.

The app itself is free of charge and the Pocket service integrates with a significant number of other apps, including apps like Tweetbot, Flipboard and Pulse. You can then choose to read the articles using the app on your iOS device, the web interface or, with the option released today, the native OS X app.
