Rumor: No Way Apple Is Working On A Subscription Video Service

Following on from an article by the WSJ yesterday which suggested that Apple could be working on a new type of subscription TV service, CNET has handed them an impressive bitch slap in the form of a rumor debunk, stating that there is no way that Apple is working on a subscription video service. Author Greg Sandoval strongly suggests that Apple is certainly not going to be in a position to offer a subscription based video service through iTunes in the near future, simply because movie studios want to make consumers pay more for online content.

“…does this sound like the studios are willing to back a new subscription service from Apple or for anyone else for that matter? No. Don’t put any stock in the rumors…My sources at the studios said three weeks ago that an Apple subscription service is not coming anytime soon, if ever….The talk coming out of Hollywood is about raising prices for content and offering Netflix less, not more. They don’t want to discount content just because it’s on the Web.”

Match? Apple On The Verge Of Launching iTunes Replay For Movies

A new report from AppAdvice is suggesting that Apple is about to launch iTunes Replay, a feature will act as a download on demand service for movies and TV shows that have already been purchased. Similar to the iCloud music concept, the service is essentially targeted towards viewable media rather than music.

“iTunes Replay is an extension to what Apple is already doing with iCloud and free re-downloads of previously purchased music. As Apple secures the remaining rights, TV Shows as well as Movies in iTunes will be given little arrow indicating whether they’re “iTunes Replay eligible”, that is, available to be downloaded subsequent times. Note that some content will unfortunately only be available to download five times and we don’t know how streaming will count towards that limit.”

Spotify To Arrive In The USA Soon; Will Beat iTunes Match

The European music streaming service Spotify today confirmed that it would be launching a new service for the United States in a matter of weeks (via CultofMac). Spotify itself is currently in the final stages of negotiating deals with the major record labels in the USA and will likely launch sometime after July 5th.

That date means that the Spotify launch in the USA will beat the new iTunes match service which is scheduled to launch as part of iCloud this Fall. The iTunes match service will cost around $25 per year but it is not clear yet how much the Spotify service will charge. Much of the attraction for Spotify in Europe came with the ability for users to stream 10 hours of music per month free of charge. The report suggests that the US music labels were not overly enthusiastic about this and that the free music option in the USA may not be as generous.

Google Takes On Apple’s ‘iCloud’ With Launch Of ‘Music Beta’ Service

Google has taken the bull by the horns and beaten Apple’s rumored ‘iCloud’ music locker to the market. The search giant has today announced the launch of a new ‘Music Beta’ service which will allow users to store up 20,000 music tracks in an online storage area and download and stream the content at will from any device with network access.

The new service is a direct competitor to the highly anticipated service which Apple is expected to announce at some point in the coming months, although no official confirmation of its existence or release date has been issued.  ‘Music Beta’ also competes with Amazon’s Cloud Player service which was recently launched without full agreement from music labels.  However, the free service is currently only open through an invitation based system for users based in the USA.

Rumor: Apple Close To Launching iTunes Cloud Music Locker

According to new reports, Apple has reached agreements with two of the four major music labels and is hoping to launch a new cloud music locker service soon. AllThingsD is reporting that Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services will be attempting to negotiate the remaining two deals in New York today, in the hope of beating Amazon’s new streaming service.

Apparently the reason for the negotiations is so that Apple can use the massive song library that it has built up with iTunes as a file source for users. Each song in the library would apparently act as a Master Copy that could be provided to users, on demand.

Mobile Music; Apple Looking To Bring Music Downloads In Line With Apps

Apple is reportedly in negotiations with music labels with a view to changing policies on their online music store that would allow consumers who have purchased iTunes tracks to access and download those tracks multiple times on different devices, all under the umbrella of using an Apple ID (via Bloomberg).  The move would mean that iTunes music would essentially fall under the same rules as apps i.e. buy once and download on any device as many times as you want with your Apple ID without paying any extra.

According to the report, the major music labels involved in the negotiations are Universal, Sony, Warner and EMI.  If Apple manages to get the music labels on board then it would mean that users would essentially have a permanent backup of their digital content purchased from iTunes that could be accessed from anywhere with their Apple ID.  The Apple ID of course holds the purchase history of a customer.
