Apple Patches Evasi0n Jailbreak With iOS 6.1.3 Beta

Evasi0n
The latest version of iOS software, which is currently in testing, apparently patches the exploits that are used by the Evasi0n jailbreak, meaning that the new software will prevent the jailbreak being used (via Forbes). The new beta 2 version of iOS 6.1.3, which was released for developer testing by Apple last week, apparently patches one of the five bugs that the Evasi0n jailbreak uses in order to allow access to the root file system of iOS devices, according to evad3rs team member @planetbeing aka David Wang.

While there are a number of other vulnerabilities that can be used by jailbreak software in order to jailbreak an iOS device, evad3rs are looking to see whether the latest version of iOS 6 patches any of the other holes. If it does, then it is likely that evasi0n would no longer be effective should users update to the latest iOS release, when iOS 6.1.3 is offered to the public.

Spotify May Arrive On iOS Devices Free Of Charge

Spotify

The online music streaming service Spotify will soon be in negotiations with music labels to bring their service to iOS devices free of charge. According to The Verge, Spotify is due to renew their music licensing contracts with many of the major music labels and, as part of the negotiations, sources are saying that Spotify will be seeking to reduce the licensing fees that it pays to the labels. As part of this, they will also be negotiating to bring streaming to iOS devices, and indeed other mobile devices, free of charge, as opposed to the current situation whereby only premium subscribers can access Spotify on their mobile device.

The report notes that Spotify has a user base of over 20 million worldwide and as such, is looking to use their ad-supported free-of-subscription-charge model on mobile devices as well as on desktop computers. This is similar to Pandora who offer both free, ad-supported versions and premium no-ad versions of its streaming platform on desktop PCs and on iOS devices.

Apple Releases iOS 6.1.2 With Exchange Bug Fix (Updated)

iPhone 5

Apple has today released an update to iOS 6 in the form of iOS 6.1.2. The update is significant because it carries a fix for the issue that affected Exchange ActiveSync and iOS devices resulting in the excessive generation of transaction logs on Exchange servers. The bug was centered around calendar meeting requests on Exchange accounts and has apparently been resolved in the new update.

The update unfortunately doesn’t address an issue that was brought to light last week in the form of a bug that allowed access to a users iPhone even if the Passcode lock function was enabled. Despite this, the latest update is available from Apple now as an over-the-air update in the Settings app on iOS devices.

iOS 6.1 Bug Allows Bypassing Of Passcode Lock

Passcode
A new bug has been identified in iOS 6.1 that allows users to bypass the numerical lock screen on the iPhone to gain access to the iPhone itself. The bug was spotted by Jailbreak Nation who have posted a ‘how-to’ guide in order that users can identify the bug themselves. The glitch itself is based on a user, or indeed malicious user, entering a complicated string of commands when the iPhone is locked, including inputting and dialing an emergency number such as 911 or 999.

The support documents notes that ‘Apple and Microsoft are investigating this issue’ and will post more information as soon as it becomes available. Microsoft does recommend that Enterprise users open an Enterprise Support case with Apple ‘to report and diagnose the behavior in iOS 6.1′.

The release of the document follows on from recent reports that some large organizations have experienced following the discovery of a bug in ActiveSync interactions on iOS 6.1. The Microsoft support document offers several workarounds for the issues that may be experienced in some Exchange platforms. These include removing and recreating the device partnership and asking users not to process Calendar items on the device. iOS 6.1 Update Causing Major Problems With Exchange Servers

Mail iOS 6
The latest update to iOS 6, iOS 6.1, is apparently causing some major problems with Exchange Services, resulting in some corporations suspending the use of devices running iOS 6.1 on Exchange networks (via Tony Redmond and 9to5Mac). The problems apparently stem from iOS 6.1 causing excessive transaction logs for Exchange servers, apparently generation in excess of 50GB of transaction logs in some instances due to access loops for calendar meetings.

We have also been contacted by two users, one of whom works for a major University, stating that iOS 6.1 users will be banned from accessing corporate e-mail until a bug fix is issued by Apple. Interestingly, German site iFun has today reported that Apple is rushing through an update in the form of iOS 6.1.1. However, the report is suggesting that this update predominantly deals with 3G carrier issues in Europe, and it is unclear at this time if it will affect the Exchange issues.
