Broadcom 802 11ac wifi
Following on from our discovery back in January that Apple was recruiting for System Engineers to bring 802.11ac Wi-Fi to the Mac, a new report has apparently given the first physical evidence of this in the form of pictures of a new Broadcom 802.11ac combo card for the Mac. The picture comes from TonyMacx86 (via 9to5Mac) and apparently shows a Broadcom PCI-E card with WLAN and Bluetooth that offers support for 802.11ac wireless, sometimes referred to as ’5G Gigabit Wi-Fi’. New iMac Stock Constraints Should Disappear Soon

The stock shortages associated with the popularity and yields of the new 21.5 inch and 27 inch iMacs that were announced last year should shortly be solved, according to a new report from the China Times (via Brightwire, MacRumors). Rumor: Apple Bringing AMD Graphics Cards Back To iMac?

iMac 2012
Apple could be looking to bring AMD Radeon graphics to the iMac, as the company has just placed an advertisement for a Hardware Systems Electrical Engineer on their website. The position looks for a ‘Senior EE to work on electrical & system design integration of the iMac computer system’. One of the key qualifications for this post is experience in AMD Graphics Processing Units or GPUs, as well as experience in Nvidia GPUs.

This is a rather interesting requirement because, in the past month, Apple released an updated iMac which brought significant improvements to the graphics processing power. This was provided by Nvidia GeForce graphics cards, which replaced the AMD Radeon GPUs found in the previous version of the iMac. With this latest job advertisement, Apple could be looking to offer AMD graphics cards in the iMac once again, perhaps as an alternative to the Nvidia cards to which currently, anyone purchasing a new iMac is limited.

Opinion: The iMac And The Problems With Good Design

The new iMac was released for sale in Apple retail stores and the Apple online store yesterday and many people have rushed to pick up the latest model. So much so, in fact, that shipping estimates for the new Mac have started to lengthen significantly. However, the awesome tear-down folk at iFixit have managed to get their hands on one and have taken it apart to reveal the interior of the iMac.

While the iMac certainly looks beautiful, both inside and out, the repairability score has dropped from 7 out of 10 for the previous model of iMac, down to a rather poor 3 out of 10, meaning that it’s almost nigh on impossible for your average user to repair any of the components. ‘Aha!’ I hear you cry, ‘But that’s what the Genius bar is for’. To some extent, that’s true, we don’t tend to twiddle with Mac repair in the same way we do PCs. But, there is another big issue.
