If You Haven’t Tried Tweetbot, Hit It Up Right Now…Seriously

Sometimes you are sitting there, tweeting away on your Mac or your iPhone or even your iPad, and you stop and take a pause for a minute. I was in the same situation yesterday after a minor Twitter app update which still didn’t give the ability to look at a timeline on one device, and then switch to a different device ten minutes later and pick up where I left off on the unread tweets. Such a small difference, but it’s one of the reasons I switched, yesterday, from Twitter to Tweetbot.

Don’t get me wrong. Twitter has produced two very good, clean Twitter clients for the iPhone and iPad but, if you are a Tweetbot user, you notice the difference between ‘very good’ and excellent. Because that’s what Tweetbot is…excellent. It excels in all the dominant areas that the Twitter apps excel, but Tweetbot hits up all the areas you didn’t even know you wanted hit on.

Rumor: iPhone 5 Home Buttons Appear for Sale

Home buttons that are apparently destined for the iPhone 5 have today appeared for sale on a Chinese supplier site. The buttons, colored either black or white, appeared on the site TVC-Mall.com of Shenzhen, China under the category of iPhone 5 replacement parts, a section of the site which, until recently, had been empty.

The biggest surprise, or perhaps disappointment, for some is that the Home buttons appear to be round in shape. If the parts turn out to be genuine, then this would essentially quash any suggestion that Apple was redesigning the iPhone 5 with an oval touch capacitive Home button.

Apple Highlights Potential For The ‘iPhone At Work’

Apple has just posted a new page for the iPhone on their website called ‘iPhone at Work‘ which highlights the potential for the device to be used at the office, and for traveling, as well as at home. The page details many of the iPhone features in the context of business, with sections focused upon organization, business tracking, project management, organizing meetings and traveling.

The page has links to several apps which are particularly relevant for the iPhone in business, including the stock iOS apps such as Mail, Calendar and Contacts, but also apps like OmniFocus, Daylite Touch, Cisco WebEx Meetings and FlightTrack Pro for travel. More casual travel apps like iTranslate+ and Zagat also make an appearance.

Spankingly Good App: Pocket (Formerly Read It Later) For iOS

I’ve been spending the past few days playing with the new Pocket app, the replacement for the Read It Later app which has proven to be so popular among iOS users. The new app, as with others, enable you to surf the web and ‘pocket’ articles, video and webpages for reading later. It has essentially the same functionality as the Pro (paid) version of its predecessor Read It Later and many of the best features from this app have been incorporated into the free Pocket app.

Rather than describe every single feature in excruciating detail, I’m gonna go right for the jugular (particularly since the app is free). The Pocket app is essentially in competition with Readability and Instapaper and the most obvious question you are probably asking yourself if you are a user of either of these services is ‘should I switch?’ . Well, to be honest, there’s no easy answer, it is truly a matter of preference. But here’s something that might help make your decision. Pocket is free, it’s beautiful, and it’s works brilliantly. I’ve moved Instapaper from the home screen on my iPad and iPhone to the second scroll screen on both devices and replaced it with Pocket, for the foreseeable future at least.

Rumor: LiquidMetal iPhone 5 At WWDC In June

A new rumor has popped up from ETNews.com, a Korean website which is claiming that Apple will utilize Liquidmetal alloys in the iPhone to make it even more resistant to damage and breaking. The site is suggesting that the next generation iPhone will have rear panel that is made entirely of a new alloy, termed liquid metal in the report, with Apple ditching the current glass rear panel construction.

Apple purchased the rights to use Liquidmetal in 2010, a hard wearing material that is very durable, has a high tensile strength, and is hard wearing. It was unclear what Apple was going to use the material in initially, but many people had thought that it would emerge at some point in the casings for an iPhone, an iPad or even in the MacBook line-up.

Rumor: iPhone 5 To Sport Unibody Design, 4 Inch Screen And A5X Processor

A flurry of rumors have emerged surrounding the next generation iPhone 5 as the world turns its eyes to the next major iOS device release. The main rumor stems from a report by Brian White, analyst at Topeka Captial Markets who is suggesting that, as a result of a trip to Asia for some friendly banter with a number of companies in the Apple supply chain, the iPhone 5 will have a 4 inch screen, versus the 3.5 inches seen in the current models (via MacRumors). He also suggests that the device will see a major redesign, with a unibody case, and that it will be 4G compatible.

The 4 inch display has been discussed at length previously, as increasing the screen size is more complicated than simply attaching a 4 inch touchscreen to the front of a redesigned device. The larger screen size would mean that developers would have to rewrite all their apps to cope with a different resolution, if the iPhone 5 were to retain the current Retina Display pixel density. Or Apple could simply keep the resolution the same but drop the pixel density from 326 pixels per inch to a lower density of around 285 pixels per inch, which may be the easier option and would still be higher than the pixel density of the third generation iPad at 264 ppi.

Rumor: Random Foxconn Dude Suggests iPhone 5 In June

A new report sourced from a random Foxconn employee is suggesting that the iPhone 5 could pop up as early as June. The report comes from Macotakara who have spotted on TV Tokyo that Foxconn, the company that Apple contracts to assemble iOS devices, are apparently recruiting up to 18,000 new works with a view to getting the iPhone 5 assembled and ready for a June launch.

There have been rumors in the past suggesting that Apple would be deviating from their minimum year long interval between iPhone releases to release an iPhone 5 in June, but coming so soon after the release of the iPhone 4S in October 2011, is it likely that the company would release a new iPhone only 8 months after the release of the last one.

Apple Looking After Your Privates By Rejecting Apps That Ask For UDID

Apple has reportedly started rejecting apps that request the use of the Unique Device Identifier, or UDID, as part of their stronger policy on user privacy. The report comes from TechCrunch who gave said that developers have been in contact with them to note that they have received rejections from apps that they submitted through the App Store approval process due to the fact that their apps requested access to the UDID.

The UDID is the unique alphanumeric number that identifies every iOS device that Apple produces and can be used to identify that device. It is hard wired into each iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and cannot be manually changed. Access to it by apps can, however, be restricted, as demonstrated by Apple’s new policy which reflects the focus on user privacy. Now, six months after giving notice to developers, Apple is therefore rejecting any apps that attempt to identify a unique iOS device by accessing the UDID.
