More Support For An Apple iWatch Launch This Year

iPod nano Watch
Another report is lending support to the rumor that Apple is planning to launch an iWatch-type device and that the device is currently in development. The report comes from Bloomberg who are saying that the Apple smartwatch could actually launch a lot sooner than expected and that the company is planning to have the first iteration of the device launched this year.

The article suggests that Apple has around 100 product design experts allocated to the smartwatch team and that much of the the functionality currently offered by the iPhone and iPad could be ported across and run by the device instead. The feature list could include telephone functionality (perhaps in conjunction with the iPhone rather than standalone functionality) and mapping services. In addition the device could potentially incorporate many new functions that aren’t normally offered by the iPhone or iPad without additional hardware such as a pedometer and heart rate monitoring.

Flexible Glass Apple SmartWatch Probably Not Appearing Within Three Years

Corning

Following on from rumors suggesting that Apple was working on a brand new iWatch-like device, a new report is saying that it is unlikely that a device incorporating flexible glass will launch within the next three years. The report comes from Bloomberg who have information from Corning, the manufacturer of the new flexible ‘Willow Glass’ that was touted to appear in a new flexible Apple device that would be worn on the wrist. According to Corning, it is unlikely that companies will be able to start producing devices with flexible displays within the next three years.

Corning are apparently putting a significant amount of effort into teaching companies how to work with the new glass, as they are ‘not accustomed to glass you roll up’, according to James Clappin, president of Corning Glass.

Apple iWatch Speculation Continues

iPod watch

The speculation surrounding the rumored Apple iWatch concept gained an interesting perspective today as Jean-Louis Gassée, former Apple executive at Apple during the 80′s and early 90′s, published a piece with his opinion on the device. On the site Monday Note, Gassée suggests that the popularity iPod nano wristbands give some indication as to Apple’s plans for an iWatch, noting that such a device could become an “even more personal personal computer – an intimate computer”.

Rumor: Apple Looking To Bring Full USB 3.0 Support To iOS Devices

Lightning Connector
Apple may be preparing to offer full USB 3.0 support for the iOS devices, as they look to recruit individuals for USB testing on new iOS and iPod product lines. The company is today advertising for a Senior Software Quality Engineer (USB) to join the USB Connectivity Compliance QA Team. The individual is expected to have knowledge of high speed bus device testing including SuperSpeed USB 3.0 as well as USB 2.0.

USB 3.0 connectivity, while supported through USB 3.0 ports on newer Macs, is not currently supported by iOS devices. The new Lightning connector is thought to be able to support USB 3.0 data transfer speeds, although when plugged into the new USB 3.0 ports incorporated into the latest Macs, the data transfer is equivalent to that of USB 2.0, as stated on Apple’s specifications for the Lightning connector cables. With this hire, Apple may be looking to expand their testing team for implementing the new USB 3.0 connectivity standard within iOS devices.

Rumor: Apple Smart Watch Development Is Real

iPod nano Watch
The rumored Apple smartwatch is real and is apparently being worked on by a significant number of individuals within the company, according to a new report from Bloomberg. The report suggests that a team comprised of around 100 product designers are working on a device that is designed to be worn as a wristwatch, and that will be able to demonstrate functionality comparable to the iPhone and iPad. The Apple Smart Watch team is apparently sourced from software and hardware engineers who have experience of working and developing the iPhone and iPad.

While it’s not clear at what stage the device is actually at, the report indicates that the significant numbers of engineers that are attached to the project give an indication that the product has moved to a level of development that is past experimentation i.e. towards a product that is destined for eventual public release. While Apple apparently constructs many prototypes for new products, many of them are not seen outside of Cupertino, never moving beyond the experimentation stage.

Rumor: The Apple Smartwatch

iPod nano Watch
A report today is suggesting that Apple is working on a new Smartwatch with a design that incorporates a new type of curved glass that is bent to the curvature of the wrist. The rumor comes from the New York Times who report that ‘people familiar with the company’s explorations’ are suggesting that the device will run iOS software and will have a unique ability to stand apart from competitors due to developments in how glass can be curved aroud parts of the human body.

The report has a significant amount of detail related to the glass itself, suggesting that the device could incorporate a new type of bendable glass known as Willow Glass, which is made by Corning, who also make the Gorilla Glass found in other iOS devices. The report doesn’t give an accurate timepoint for release, but does suggest that it could be released in 2013.

Review: A Cheap, Crap Lightning Connector Cable

Lightning Connector
The launch of the iPhone 5, the new iPod line-up and the fourth generation iPad was accompanied by the new Lightning connector and the release of a number of Lightning adapter cables from Apple. These cables, required for charging and transferring data to and from a device, are available on the Apple Store starting at a price of $19.00. We were curious, so decided to order a couple of cheap third party Lightning connector cables for around $3 each to compare against the full priced Apple versions.

Many iOS users prefer to have multiple cables in multiple locations (at home, in the car, at work). As such, there is a popular market for cheap third party Lightning connector cables. We ordered two Lightning to USB connector cables from a high profile retailer that sourced them from two separate manufacturers based in Asia. Both arrived in around two weeks and looked almost indistinguishable from the official Apple version. That is where the similarity ended.

Thunderbolt Display Supplies Start Getting Low In Some Apple Stores

thunderbolt shipping
Following on from the report on Monday that third party resellers were starting to see stock shortages in the 27 inch Thunderbolt display, the shortages seem now to be extending to online Apple Stores in some international markets. The online Apple Store in the United Kingdom has just been updated to reflect shipping delays in the 27 inch Thunderbolt display, with the shipping status moving from ‘In Stock’ to dispatching in 3-5 days. The same is also true in other online Apple Stores like the Apple Store Ireland and the online store in the United Arab Emirates which were updated recently to reflect the shipping delays.

Apple Thunderbolt Display Is In Short Supply At Retailers

Thunderbolt Display
The 27 inch Apple Thunderbolt Display is apparently running a little short at some third party retailers, which could translate to a new version of the display launching soon. According to the report from AppleInsider, the Thunderbolt Display is running out of stock at some third party sellers such as Amazon, MacMall and J&R Electronics. That said, there are still supplies available at Apple’s own online store and retail stores, so it could just be a stock blip.
