Rumor: A Shaped Battery With Long Life For The iWatch

iPod Battery iFixit

Novel iWatch Rumor: Shake Your Wrist In The Sun

iPod watch
A new report is today suggesting that Apple is looking at several different methods for charging and maintaining power in the highly anticipated iWatch device. The report comes from the New York Times who say that Apple is looking at taking a relatively novel approach by utilizing induction charging for the iWatch, where instead of being plugged into to a wired power supply, the iWatch would simply be placed on an induction charging plate to charge the battery. In addition, the company is also looking at using either solar or motion charging to extend the battery life of the iWatch.

The iWatch For The Under-30′s

iPod nano Watch
An opinion article from Forbes today suggests that the ‘health-obsessed’ iWatch may not actually be terribly appealing for consumers under 30. The article, by clearly-over-40 Anthony Wing Kosner, comes on the back of a report last night that suggests that Apple’s long-rumored iWatch will have a substantial number of health monitoring features including measurements of heart rate, distance walked or run, calories burnt, blood pressure or blood glucose concentration. The article suggests that the primary market for an iWatch with these features would actually be baby-boomers and the elderly.

The article correctly observes that these capabilities incorporated into the iWatch don’t tend to suggest that the device would specifically be a health monitoring device. So it is perhaps a misnomer to call it health obsessed. If the most recent rumors were true then it would be more accurate to refer to it as a fitness accessory, particularly if accessories were involved.

New Reports Reveal More About Health Monitoring In iOS 8 And The iWatch

Fitbit Force
Two new reports have appeared today which offer up some more details on the potential functionality of the long-rumored iWatch. The first report comes from the New York Times who say that Apple executives met with the US Food and Drug Administration last month to talk about mobile medical monitoring applications. It’s not particularly clear what they were talking about but rumors suggest that it was either to assess the regulatory requirements for medical devices, or a meeting to solve an issue with pushing ‘something’ through FDA approval.

The report also suggests that Apple has been extensively exploring devices that are able to monitor various aspects of a person’s health. It is therefore thought that some of this functionality would either be contained within the iWatch, or within new sensor device accessories that could be paired with an iDevice like the iPhone.  The functionality could actually be similar to some of that offered by the Fitbit Force (pictured above) or Nike+ Fuelband apps.

Apple Gets ‘Aggressive’ Over Sapphire Sub-Components

iPhone 5S
A new report is today suggesting that the new Apple manufacturing plant located in Arizona will be the hotbed for the manufacturing of a sapphire-based sub-component. The article from 9to5Mac provides documents that shows that Apple is looking for approval of their ‘Application for Interim Production Notification’ so that they can “meet an aggressive go-live timeline of February of 2014″. The timeline indicates that Apple could therefore include more sapphire-based components in their products as early as this year.

More Support For An Apple iWatch Launch This Year

iPod nano Watch
Another report is lending support to the rumor that Apple is planning to launch an iWatch-type device and that the device is currently in development. The report comes from Bloomberg who are saying that the Apple smartwatch could actually launch a lot sooner than expected and that the company is planning to have the first iteration of the device launched this year.

The article suggests that Apple has around 100 product design experts allocated to the smartwatch team and that much of the the functionality currently offered by the iPhone and iPad could be ported across and run by the device instead. The feature list could include telephone functionality (perhaps in conjunction with the iPhone rather than standalone functionality) and mapping services. In addition the device could potentially incorporate many new functions that aren’t normally offered by the iPhone or iPad without additional hardware such as a pedometer and heart rate monitoring.

Flexible Glass Apple SmartWatch Probably Not Appearing Within Three Years

Corning

Following on from rumors suggesting that Apple was working on a brand new iWatch-like device, a new report is saying that it is unlikely that a device incorporating flexible glass will launch within the next three years. The report comes from Bloomberg who have information from Corning, the manufacturer of the new flexible ‘Willow Glass’ that was touted to appear in a new flexible Apple device that would be worn on the wrist. According to Corning, it is unlikely that companies will be able to start producing devices with flexible displays within the next three years.

Corning are apparently putting a significant amount of effort into teaching companies how to work with the new glass, as they are ‘not accustomed to glass you roll up’, according to James Clappin, president of Corning Glass.

Apple iWatch Speculation Continues

iPod watch

The speculation surrounding the rumored Apple iWatch concept gained an interesting perspective today as Jean-Louis Gassée, former Apple executive at Apple during the 80′s and early 90′s, published a piece with his opinion on the device. On the site Monday Note, Gassée suggests that the popularity iPod nano wristbands give some indication as to Apple’s plans for an iWatch, noting that such a device could become an “even more personal personal computer – an intimate computer”.
