Another Poorly Sourced Analyst Claim For An Apple Television In 2013?

Analyst Gene Munster, longtime and enthusiastic evangelist of the Apple television set, and analyst at Piper Jaffray, has come forward with another alleged update on an Apple television set. According to Business Insider, the analyst claims to have intelligence suggesting that Apple will be releasing a television set in late 2013, contradicting his earlier claims that the device would be released by this year, and then latterly in early 2013.

The new Apple television, according to Munster, will have a pretty large display size, with estimates ranging from 42 inches to 55 inches, and it will cost between $1,500 and $2,000. No further details are given on why the television will not launch until November 2013 i.e. what has pre-empted the change in the Munsters predictions.

With The iPad Mini, Apple Is Obviously A Failure; Isn’t It?

The iPad mini went on sale just three days ago and, unsurprisingly sold out within three days. While most people reacting to the launch of the iPad mini were overwhelmingly positive, there is always a small bunch who would gleefully love to see the company fail to shift the a substantial amount of devices. I refer to one such example in the form of this column written a few days ago, with the author suggesting that the iPad mini was a big fail.

The main accusation is that Apple has ‘diluted the market to the point of of ridiculous now’. Just for a second, consider that phrase. My interpretation is that, instead of the company diluting the market, there is now a $329 iPad mini, a $399 iPad 2 and a $499 iPad 3 in a variety of storage options. Sorry, but is there anything wrong with having a choice?

Twitter Makes Some Unwelcome Changes

Twitter has announced that it is making substantial, and extraordinarily unwelcome, changes to way it allows third party apps, like the awesome Tweetbot app, to access its services. According to new guidelines, third party developers of Twitter clients will have to work closely with Twitter itself to obtain permission to access their services if they have a large number of users. This number is being limited to 100,000 in the first instance, but if an app developer obtains permission and already has 100,000 users then it can be increased to up to 200,000.

What this essentially does, therefore, is for every given app, the limit of the amount of users it can have is 200,000 which makes it very difficult and puts a very strict cap on how many users an app like Tweetbot can ever have. The other bitter pill to swallow is that, because the official Twitter client is so bad, it’s a weird way of forcing users into a client they don’t want to use.

Carriers Already Accepting New iPhone 5 Pre-Orders

As was the case prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S, some confident European carriers have begun issuing pre-order reservation tickets for the next generation iPhone 5. Despite the fact that the existence of the device has not yet been announced or confirmed by Apple, German carrier Deutsche Telekom is offering pre-order reservation tickets from today (iphone-ticker.de via 9to5Mac).

The tickets that are being issued, from August 14, give the customer the guarantee that they will receive a new iPhone by super fast express delivery on the first day that it is made available. That does not necessarily mean launch day however, it simply means the first day that enough iPhone units are made available to that carrier. The carrier does not give the new device a name rather ‘a new smartphone that is coming soon’.

Tenuous Rumor: New Photos Of iPad Mini Show A Device Without A Camera

Some new photos have been published which appear to show the rear shell of the highly rumored iPad mini, a device which Apple is expected to release in the coming months. The photos (on Weibo spotted by Apple.pro), show a rear panel that is highly distinct from the rear panel of the current generation of iPad models, with what appears to be much less tapering on the edges of the panel. In addition, these latest pictures seem to indicate that the new iPad mini doesn’t have a camera.

Despite the fact that the photos have caused a bit of discussion, they are most likely to be fake. Smaller sized Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPod touch both have powerful cameras, and given the presence of a camera in the iPad 2 and third generation iPad, it’s unlikely that Apple would release a new device without one. In addition to this, the quality of the photos is poor but seems to show a much boxier, squarer shell which would certainly be a step backwards in design.

Rumor: Weird Crusty iPhone 5 Mockup Photos Appear

A new series of photos depicting a mocked up model of the highly anticipated iPhone 5 has appeared online, showing a device that is around half an inch taller than the existing iPhone but the same width. The photos come from KitGuru who are trying to say that it’s the actual device which is obviously not the case unless it’s made out of plastic and dunked in vinegar overnight.

Chinese Sellers Already Accepting iPhone 5 Preorders

The Chinese commerce site Taobao has some sellers on it that have already started accepting pre-orders for the as yet unannounced iPhone 5. The rumored device is being offered at a starting price of $5088 Hong Kong dollars (equal to about $655 USD), and is available for pre-order now (via Reuters). Apparently, the sellers are accepting the money, or a sizable deposit, with the intention of purchasing the iPhone 5 in Hong Kong or the United States and then shipping the device to mainland China. The catch is, of course, that the device hasn’t been announced or released yet and unsurprisingly the seller could not offer a specific delivery time.

Rumored New iPod Nano Design Has A Funny Smell About It

A new report is suggesting that Apple is going to be regressing in their design influences for the iPod nano, and going back to the horizontal design of the fifth generation iPod nano (or equally the first generation). The report, or rumor, comes from Macotakara who suggest that the next version of the iPod nano will be much like the fifth generation model except not as tall and will, surprisingly, have a Home button. The new iPod will also have a thinner form factor and will apparently arrive in the Fall of this year.

Fake iPhone 5 Accessories Are Breeding Rapidly

A large number of cases and accessories that are apparently destined for the iPhone 5 have started floating around and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Surprisingly enough these accessories are found on some pretty reputable websites and, given there heterogeneous nature, are unlikely to give any information about the upcoming and highly anticipated Apple device. We’ll start you off with the cracking picture above, from the website Lingosbox, which appears to show a number of boxes containing a dock for the ‘iPhone 5′. Someone is therefore going to be pretty pissed if it’s called ‘the new iPhone’.  One would also hope that they’ve taken into account the rumored changes to the dock connector.

Next on the list is an iPhone 5 case sourced from Alibaba.com (pictured below).  It’s described as a hard cover case for an ‘iPhone 5S’ and has a design that suggests it is fitted for a device with a a tapered rear panel, taking design influences from the iPad 2 and new iPad.  This is of course consistent with many of the rumors surrounding the design of the iPhone 5, but it’s unlikely this supplier has anything to go on other than some variable hypotheses about the iPhone 5 design.

Kaspersky Suggests Lack Of iOS Antivirus Will ‘Mean Disaster For Apple’

The head honcho of the Kaspersky Labs security company, Eugene Kaspersky, is suggesting that the fact that Apple will not allow endpoint security software on iOS devices is a disastrous move (The Register via TNW). Obviously disappointed that we won’t be installing Kaspersky Antivirus 2012 software on the iPad and iPhone any time soon, Kaspersky said “We as a security company are not able to develop true endpoint security for iOS….That will mean disaster for Apple”.

He further goes on to suggest that Android will control up to 80% of the market share in 2015 due to security issues on other platforms like iOS (they’re gonna have to increase market share by over 30% in 3 years if that’s the case). Kaspersky also made the news recently for suggesting that Apple were 10 years behind Microsoft in security.
