Buy Apple TV, Get A $25 Gift Card…Because Why Not?

Apple TV
Apple has started offering a $25 iTunes gift card with the purchase of any Apple TV device, prompting speculation that the company was trying to drive down stock levels. Reports suggested that Apple was offering the gift card as an incentive to lower existing stocks of the Apple TV as it prepared to launch an updated model of the device. However, well-sourced Jim Dalrymple has poured cold water on the idea, pointing out that Apple will categorically not be launching a new Apple TV in the coming weeks.

Rumor: A New Apple TV Is Coming…But It’s Not What You Might Think

Apple TV
Following on from a substantial number of reports over the past few months (read: years), that Apple was working on a television set, a new report is today claiming that a new version of Apple TV is in the works, but it’s not a television set. The new Apple TV will apparently house a wireless router, essentially a shrunk down AirPort Express device with 802.11ac capabilities (via 9to5Mac). The inclusion of a router would apparently improve performance for streaming to the Apple TV, although it’s unclear what performance enhancements would be achieved.

The new Apple TV will also apparently also include a greater emphasis on gaming although it’s not fully established what that actually means i.e. would the next generation Apple TV act more like a Playstation or XBox, or would it simply have tighter integration for playing iOS games through AirPlay?

Apple TV Stock Levels Waver As Rumors Of New Apple Set Top Box Swirl

Apple TV
Some European stocks of Apple TV units are apparently a little low as recent reports suggest that Apple could be releasing a refreshed Apple TV set top box in the coming months. Apple has today updated the Apple Store in both the UK and in Ireland to reflect extended shipping times for the Apple TV in both locations, with shipping times slipping from 24 hours to 3-5 days. This is interesting in the context of recent reports from Panjiva (via Om Malik at GigaOM) who are saying that Apple has been in receipt of large numbers of ‘set top box’ shipments from its supplier BYD Precision Manufacture, located in Shenzhen, China.

Apparently, the last time such a substantial set top box shipment was made was just prior to the launch of the third generation Apple TV. That said, regular shipments of Apple TV units are to be expected, particularly given that the device sells consistently well in most markets.

Five New Apps Added To Apple TV

Apple TV Front

Apple has today updated the Apple TV software to bring five new apps to the homescreen of the Apple TV, which include two Disney apps, a Smithsonian app, a Vevo and an app for The Weather Channel. The Disney apps offer the Disney Channel and Disney XD, which give live and on-demand content, but they do require authentication through user cable providers such as Comcast or AT&T U-Verse. The Vevo app however, offers immediate access for all users to its library of over 75,000 music videos.

Similarly, the Smithsonian app does not require a subscription to be able to access, so users can immediately stream full episodes from the Smithsonian television channel. This is the same case with the app for the Weather Channel, offering on demand content and access to live shows.
