An Enthusiastic Over-Interpretation Of Tim Cook-isms

A long and deeply engaging interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook has just been published by Bloomberg Businessweek and it gives some pretty amazing insights into the man at the helm of Apple. Cook also reveals a few nuggets of information that could be wildly misinterpreted or overanalyzed, and who are we if we didn’t take some of the more obscure quotes and put forth some suggestion on what Mr Cook actually meant.

On iOS & OSX merging: “We don’t subscribe to the vision that the OS for iPhones and iPads should be the same as Mac…Customers want iOS and Mac OS X to work together seamlessly, not to be the same
The mobile and desktop operating systems produced by Apple will never merge, no matter how many people want them to.

“Do You Dare To Swear?”

An awesome tip has emerged today regarding the fastest possible way that you can get yourself put through to an actual person when making a telephone call to Apple’s support service. According to a new report from TNW, if you drop the F-bomb when speaking to an Apple automated line (or indeed many other companies), you are immediately connect to a real person. The automated service apparently listens for ‘signs of distress’ and redirects a call if specific phrases or patterns are detected.

This isn’t just limited to Apple but was discovered when a Reddit user swore at the automated system used by Apple support and was immediately connected to a support technician. It might not work all the time however, particularly since the report suggests that the person may very well reroute you back in to the call queue.

Opinion: Massive Changes In Apple Execs Will Translate To Big Changes In Software

In a significant restructuring of top-tier management, Apple yesterday announced that Senior Vice President of iOS Software, Scott Forstall, and Senior Vice President of Retail, John Browett would be leaving the company. Forstall originally started with Apple directly when it purchased NeXT in 1997, and Browett was there for a less-than-glamorous tender of less than six months.  The implications of these guys leaving are, particularly in Forstall’s case, obviously huge.

The biggest impacts will come as new division heads move into place. Eddy Cue is now in charge of Siri and Maps, two areas of iOS which are essentially in beta at the moment, and will require a significant amount of work in order to bring them up to the standards that are normally associated with Apple products. In addition, Craig Federighi is now head of iOS development and will likely seek to put his own stamp on the flagship mobile software. Bob Mansfield, who earlier in the year was looking to retire, is staying with the company for another two years to lead the Technologies group, responsible for all wireless teams in Apple.

Rumor: iPad Mini Event To Be Held On Tuesday, October 23

The media launch event for the highly anticipated iPad mini will apparently be taking place on Tuesday, October 23 2012 and will likely be held on Apple’s campus in an auditorium (via AllThingsD). Previous rumors stemming from major Apple investors had suggested that company would be invitations for a media event due to be held on October 17. It was expected that the invitations would be issued on October 10, but when that date came and went without the appearance of invitations, all eyes turned to the following week. While Apple tends to hold media events on Wednesdays, this event is reportedly taking place on a Tuesday.

No word has yet emerged on when pre-orders for the device would start to take place or indeed when it would be eventually released to the public. The location of the event is still a mystery but it’s worth noting that the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, a popular Apple media event location, also has a free schedule on that day. Given the source of the information, however, this is the most reliable report thus far regarding the date of the event.

Rumor: Invitations For iPad Mini Launch Event To Be Issued October 10

A new rumor is today suggesting that Apple would be sending out media invitations to the launch of the highly anticipated (and as yet unseen) iPad mini on October 10. The rumor stems from the oft-critical-of-rumors Philip Elmer-DeWitt who writes for Apple 2.0, and is saying that a source who is a major Apple investor has heard about the issue of the invitations taking place next month.

Should this rumor turn out to be true, then it could be expected that Apple would unveil the iPad mini in the middle of the following week, which would place the announcement date for the new device at Wednesday October 17. The iPad mini itself will then likely being pre-orders around a week later, in a similar fashion to the iPhone 5.
