Apple No Longer Offering 24 Hour Dispatch In Some International Online Stores

Apple Store 24 hour
Apple seems to be no longer committing to dispatching products sold through some international online Apple Stores within 24 hours, according to some changes spotted on the Apple Store website. The company previously offered 24 hour dispatch for the majority of the products offered on some international online Apple Stores, in sections such as iPod, Mac and iPhone, or the accessories pages for these items. Whereas yesterday, the majority of items were listed as dispatching within 24 hours, all items are now listed as dispatching within 1-2 business days. This is a particularly significant change if shopping for an item at the weekend on a non-business day.

The reason for the change is unknown, whether it is due to a new policy that has been implemented in some international Apple Stores, or whether the company cannot guarantee meeting demand for an product within 24 hours. The change seems only to apply to certain stores in countries such as Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom.

iPod nano Watch
Following on from multiple rumors suggesting that Apple will be launching a smartwatch device near the end of 2013, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has suggested that the so called ‘iWatch’ will not debut until the second half of 2014 at the earliest (via MacRumors). The analyst, who has repeatedly demonstrated accurate knowledge of unreleased Apple products in the past, suggested that due to issues developing both hardware and software for the device, production will not start until after mid-2014, placing release of the device in the second half of next year.

The iWatch is rumored to sport a 2 inch display that will incorporate a key number of features over and above that offered by the iPod nano with a watch strap attachment. Some of these features have been suggested to be biometric-related and will likely be targeted and the sports, fitness and health areas. The device is expected to run some form of iOS software but it’s not clear how much functionality Apple is looking to offer, particularly given the expectations of the public on battery life.

Apple Launches New Online Store Front

Apple Store

Apple has today made a few significant changes to the front page of the online Apple Store, opting for a more minimalist look, with bigger pictures and less text links on either side of the page. The new look of the Store places product images front and center and is focused upon a product structured navigation system. An example of this is that users can find iPhone accessories by going through the iPhone product image links, and clicking on an ‘iPhone Accessories’ link in the top navigation bar.

With less text links, the Store offers a cleaner look, but more than this, the Store offers a slightly different design, with the boxes surrounding the images more squared off and looking more like tiles. The Store now also places a significant amount of emphasis on third party accessories and peripherals for Apple products.

App Store Hits 40 Billion Download Milestone

iTunes App Store
Apple has today announced that the iOS App Store has hit the 40 billion downloads mark since its launch in 2008 with almost half of those downloads occurring in 2012. The company also noted that there are now over 500 million active App Store accounts and that December offered some crazy downloading activity with over two billion downloads occurring during that month alone. The figures quoted actually exclude re-downloads and updates, so that’s 40 billion purchases.

Interestingly, the press release also alludes to the amount paid out to Developers over the period of the App Store being in existence, with over $7 billion in sales. The Store now offers in excess of 775,000 iOS apps in total with over 300,000 of those being natively designed for the iPad.

The analyst also suggests that the new functionality will have close integration with ticket and merchandise purchasing services like Ticketmaster or Live Nation. The prediction follows previous rumors that Apple was in the middle of negotiations to bring the iRadio service to fruition, despite some tricky negotiations with music content providers.

Rumor: Apple Working On A New iWatch

iPod nano Watch
Apple is apparently working, in a collaborative effort with Intel, to produce an intelligent, Bluetooth 4.0-based iWatch, with speculation pointing towards a release in the first half of 2013. The new device will reportedly have a 1.5 inch display and will have some functionality powered by Siri. The report comes from iPhone.tgbus (via 163.com) who say that the device will have an OLED screen and Bluetooth 4.0.

While some aspects of this story are perhaps a little less believable than others, there may be some truth behind the details. Ever since the new elongated iPod nano design was launched, many people have speculated on how Apple could release a device with substantial functionality that could be easily strapped to the wrist. The previous generation of iPod nano went some way towards this but with Apple revising the design to a more retro look, there is now a gap for the company to release something more substantial than a music player and fitness accessory.
