Twitter Releases ‘Vine’ Video-Sharing App For iOS

Vine
A new app has today been released by Twitter bringing with it the ability to share video on the Twitter platform. The app is called Vine and it is a standalone app that is free of charge and allows users to share small, short videos that are looped, on the Twitter service. The app accepts videos of six seconds or less in length and is relatively simple to use.  The Vine app is used to shoot the video, with or without sound, and then users can then tweet the video.

While there are third party alternatives to Vine, this is the official Twitter version of a video sharing app for the service. The app itself is currently only offering support for the iPhone and the iPod touch, and it’s not clear whether the iPad will be natively supported at a later date.  The app does offer integration with Facebook, however, and is much like a video-based version of Instagram.

RunKeeper Releases Major New Update For iOS App

Runkeeper

In a spectacularly well timed release for those who are planning to increase their fitness level in the New Year, RunKeeper has released the next major version of their iOS app. Version 3.0 of RunKeeper brings with it a new user interface which is cleaner and easier to use than its predecessor. Users will apparently find it more motivating as it more clearly highlights personal fitness achievements, translating, one would hope, to increased usage.

The new app also improves the social aspect of the app, meaning that more weight is placed upon competing with friends and colleagues, as well as enhanced functionality related to in-app photo sharing of workouts. All of these features are integrated with Facebook and Twitter so you can post to social networks without having to move to another app.

Facebook Releases ‘Poke’ App For iOS

Poke
Facebook has today released a rather interestingly titled app called ‘Poke’ for iOS devices, which allows users to send time limited messages, containing either text, photos or videos. The concept of the app is similar to Snapchat, in that that a user sends the message to one of their Facebook friends and then that friend holds their finger on the screen of their iOS device until the time runs out.

The app allows you to ‘poke’ several friends at once and gives you the option of setting a time limit of 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. After that pre-determined time limit expires, then your message is deleted from the Poke app. The app itself only works with iOS devices at the moment but Facebook is expected to release versions on other platforms like Android.

Google Unleashes Google Maps App For iPhone

Google Maps iPhone
Google has released a brand new Google Maps app for the iPhone and it is available free in both US and international App Stores right now. The release follows on from the removal of the native Google Maps app that shipped with iOS devices, and the subsequent replacement with Apple’s own mapping solution. Up until now there had been some doubt on Google’s part as to whether Apple would even approve such an app for the App Store, but given that Apple CEO Tim Cook had recommended using the web version of Google Maps to bridge an shortfall with the Apple version, it seemed unlikely.

The new app features some pretty nifty features that set it apart from its predecessor and indeed the Apple Maps app. There are now turn-by-turn directions available in the Google Map which brings it up to the standard offered by the Apple Maps app. Google does warn that these directions are in beta however and may not be perfect. However in some anecdotal testing conducted by yours truly, they worked very, very well, and is compatible with both iOS 5 and iOS 6.

Apple Releases Twelve Days Of Christmas App For 2012

Apple has today released their popular ’12 Days of Christmas’ app for the 2012 holiday season, bringing with it a whole host of holiday free-app goodness. The app, looking exactly as it did last year, gives users the opportunity to claim a selection of songs, music videos, apps, books and TV episodes for free. As noted in the terms of the app, any free downloads will only be available for 24 hours.

Sadly for US users, the app is only available to those with an iTunes account in either Canada or Europe. If you have purchased (free!) the app before then it’s just a case of re-downloading it and the app will activate on December 26 and will offer free gifts right the way through to January 6, 2013.

The Daily iPad Publication Is Dead

The Daily, News Corporation’s attempt at a daily news publication specifically designed for the iPad has been discontinued, according to a press release from the organization (via AllThingsD). The report says that some of the 120 employees who worked on The Daily will be absorbed into the New York Post, which is also owned by News Corp. According to the press release, the standalone publication of The Daily will be halted, but The Daily brand will live in other channels. This perhaps refers to increased development of the online portion of the New York Post.

The Daily was originally launched in February 2011 but was not met with great reviews, with many people suggesting that the app was unstable, slow, and difficult to navigate. The Daily also hinted at the first signs of trouble when it was revealed that The Daily was ‘on watch’ due to major financial losses of up to $30 million a year. The publication also laid off 30% of its staff earlier this year in an attempt to reduce losses.

Fantastical For iPhone Is Unleashed: Awesomeness At A Reasonable Price

Flexibits, the developers behind the Fantastical calendar app for OS X, have been doing some hard work recently, and have today released an entirely new edition of Fantastical for iOS devices. The new app has been launched on the iOS App Store today for $1.99 (£1.49) and offers a completely unique approach to calendar management on the iPhone and iPod touch. As in….completely unique!

The new app looks a lot like Fantastical for Mac, obviously, but once you start using it, the changes and new approaches that have been adopting in writing an app for the iPhone become immediately apparent. There are multiple ways to scroll through your upcoming appointments (you can pick which one is most appropriate for you), the the display is wonderfully customizable and looks fantastic on the iPhone 5.

Quick Fixes For Apple’s Maps App May Be Pretty Challenging

A report today revealed that the man that was apparently responsible for the Apple Maps app has been let go from the company as new man Eddy Cue seeks to gain control over some of the limitations in the app (via Bloomberg). Richard Williamson was head of the mapping team for Apple, and was apparently dismissed by Cue, who is reportedly seeking help from outside Apple on the best way to improve the Maps app.

In addition, Cue is reportedly putting pressure on TomTom NV, the primary source of the mapping data for the Apple Maps app, to rapidly improve the data that it is providing. But this is going to be a fairly significant challenge as you have to remember that its not just TomTom that is providing the data, but dozens of other companies (check out the data attribution listing here). So, while TomTom may be the primary maps data provider, there’s a hell of a lot of other companies to consider.

Clear App For Mac Is Released (For Busy, Wealthy People)

A new version of the popular, gesture-driven list app for iOS devices, Clear, was released for OS X devices today by developers RealMac Software. The app is priced at an introductory price of $6.99 for today only, but then rising to an eventual price of $14.99. Clear for Mac looks, unsurprisingly, a lot like Clear for iPhone, except that it opened in a small window rather than in a full screen mode.

The crux of the app is that as long as you have a trackpad, you’ll be fine. The user interface works like the iOS version with two finger swiping controlling most of the action. You can use a mouse if you want but it kind of defeats the entire reasoning behind the user interface design. The app will sync over iCloud with your iOS devices so your lists will always be up to date.
