Rumor: 15 Inch MacBook Air For April Launch

Apple is reportedly preparing to release a 15 inch edition of the popular MacBook Air with a launch as soon as April, according to a new rumor from Electric Pig. The company is reportedly looking to release a 15 inch Air that could remove the need for the MacBook Pro in a similar size. The source of the information is a Mac accessory manufacturer who suggests that the release of such a device would mean that the 13 inch and 15 inch versions of the MacBook Pro would no longer be needed and that the 17 inch would be the only MacBook Pro to survive the transition.

The report is suggesting that the new device would have characteristics identical to the existing MacBook Air with ports on both sides, no optical drive, no ethernet port and the familiar thin Air-like form factor. The changes would reportedly be implemented at some point in April, including the changes to the MacBook Pro line.

Rumor: Brand New MacBook Pro Design Coming This Year

A new rumor is suggesting that Apple will abandon the current design of the MacBook Pro this year in favor of a new Air-like design. According to a rumor sourced by AppleInsider from the dreaded ‘people familiar with the Apple roadmap’, the current design of the Pro will be discontinued and a design that is based on the thin, and highly popular, MacBook Air will be introduced in its place. The new models will apparently lose the optical drive that is currently in the MacBook Pro but not in the Air, and will be introduced initially in 15 and 17 inch models.

The new MacBook Pro would likely retain the aluminum unibody that has proven so popular among Apple laptop users, and has certainly been a regular feature in the rumor mill for the past couple of years, particularly since the launch of the updated MacBook Air design. Certainly the loss of an optical drive would be a reasonable assumption given the fact that Apple has discontinued offering its products by that medium. It only seemed to be a matter of time.

Would You Want An iPad-Like MacBook Air?

The question, ‘why would you want MacBook Air that’s more like an iPad?’ is a complicated one. Despite earlier rumors, Apple is apparently not going to consider putting the ARM processors that are found in the iPad, into the next generation of MacBook Air. This may disappoint some people, but the issue is, why would you want to make the MacBook Air more like an iPad. Surely, the most desirable thing is to have a MacBook Air that looks like an Air, but functions like an iMac or Mac Pro?  The Air, as it is now, is a phenomenal device.

Is it likely that the same people who would be disappointed that the Air was not going in the direction of the iPad, are the same people that would buy either a stylus, or an integrated third party keyboard docking station for their iPad. It may be a random thought, but if you get to the point where you need a keyboard for your iPad, you perhaps wish to reconsider your computing needs.

Rumor: 15 Inch MacBook Air To Kick Off 2012?

As is the wont of the intrepid Digitimes, the site is reporting that a spankingly new MacBook Air of the 15 inch variety will be arriving in the first quarter of 2012. There are no exact details given on the sources other than that they are from the ‘upstream supply chain’ and that the new model is already in pilot production with an intended Q1 release date.

Interestingly, the report also notes that a new 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch model will also be launching which raises the question of whether the MacBook Air will see yet another fairly rapid update within months (rapid being contextual when compared against the Mac Pro).  Previously, any reports concerning a new 15 inch ultrathin laptop had specifically not mentioned that it was an Air-type model.  With this rumor, that seems to have shifted slightly into the assumption that the new device will indeed be part of the Air family.

Editorial: Smack My Mac

A familiar picture. Lying on a couch with a MacBook Air laptop on your knees, furiously typing away. You glance up, just for a second at a noise on the TV, and your skittish cat jumps up and knocks the Mac off your lap with a large clatter. Instead of being a laptop, your Mac is inadvertently and rapidly transformed to a floortop. You pick up the Mac, peering closely at the screen for damage, examining the aluminum for scratches or chips. When you detect none, you carry on writing as you were before…minus the cat.

Would the same thing have happened with a plastic computer with a hard drive versus an aluminum one with an SSD? Perhaps, but more than likely, not. The chance of structural damage might be about the same, but the SSD means that you don’t brick your laptop because the drive head had smacked off the disk. Solid State Drives may be limited in space and affordability, but they certainly excel in speed and resiliency.

Rumor: Apple To Undertake Major Device Revamp

Apple is reportedly planning a major design revamp for several of its devices next year, according to Digitimes. The site is suggesting that the iPad, the iMac, the iPhone and the MacBook Air will receive major refreshes next year that will include an design overhaul of some key components.

While you may scoff at the vagueness and untangible nature of this rumor (indeed), we are printing it for discussion, since Digitimes has had a limited amount of success with predictions in the past. Should the company actually be planning this, it’s interesting to speculate on how they would actually implement the changes.

Rumor: 15 Inch Ultra Thin Apple Notebook

Following on from a report in July in which two sources (MacRumors and TUAW) suggested that Apple was about to start production of a 15 inch ultra-thin notebook computer, Macotakara has come forward to suggest that product development has now finished for such a device and that it could enter production soon. The site suggests that the notebook will simply a 15 inch version of the MacBook Air.

The success of the MacBook Air in 11 inch and 13 inch models has been stated again and again, with Apple even discontinuing their base model white MacBook in favor of the new Air. Since its release last year, the Air has arguably set the standard for ultra thin notebook computers, with the latest iteration carrying Intel Sandy Bridge processors that, when paired with the SSD storage, result in a blisteringly fast laptop.

New Intel Chips Could Potentially Offer 24 Hours Of Battery Life In A MacBook

The latest mobile processor chips from Intel could result in laptop computers like the MacBook Air having dramatically longer battery life than current generation models (via 9to5Mac). The new Haswell chips, the successor to the Sandy Bridge architecture processors found in the current generation Macs, consume 20 times less power than the current line up of processors.  The new chips were showcased today at an Intel Developer Forum.

The new chips are also faster than the current generation of Sandy Bridge processors and operate in such a lower power state that they can be run by batteries charged by ambient light sources even while operating.  The new chips are scheduled to launch in 2013 which, when combined with battery technology improvements and novel charging methods, could see a whole new generation of MacBooks appear.

Rumor: Apple Looking To Launch 15 Inch And 17 Inch Laptops

Apple is reportedly performing final tests on a 15 inch ultra-thin laptop Mac, in line to complement the existing line up of the 13 inch MacBook Pro and the 11 inch and 13 inch MacBook Air (via MacRumors). TUAW goes even further to report that both a 15 inch and 17 inch model is in the works and that they could be launched by Christmas.

While it is apparently unclear if the new laptop is going to be branded a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, the wording of the description ‘ultra-thin’ would seem to suggest that it could be a 15 inch MacBook Air which wouldn’t be surprising given the popularity of the other models.  This runs contrary to the rumor which suggests that it is a bigger MacBook Pro that is being tested.  Additionally, while one could certainly describe the MacBook Pro as ‘thin’ it’s not overtly skinny and therefore probably isn’t going to receive the 15 inch upgrade, at least not with the description in this report.
