New Trojan Virus Can Infect Apple Mac OSX Systems

A new Java-based Trojan horse has emerged which can infect computers running Apple OSX software. The Trojan activates a Java applet which downloads an installer when users click on a link that says “Is this you in this video?”

The link can now be found on several social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Two security firms have posted bulletins on the Trojan with SecureMac stating that the worm is a critical threat whereas Intego are taking a more conservative approach by saying that there is a low risk at the moment Continue reading

iPhone Bug Allowing Access To Locked Phone Gets Attention

A problem glitch in the iPhone software (iOS version 4.1) is allowing unauthorized users to gain access to some functions in the iPhone even when it has been locked using a four digit numeric code (via MacRumors).

Once the bypass is performed (by making an emergency call to a non-emergency number like ### and immediately pressing the lock key), users can access user data including contacts, call histories and voicemails.  In this state, the iPhone is capable of displaying this information but the majority of the other iPhone functions remain unavailable. Needing Some Support: Is AppleCare Insurance Worth Buying?

With more and more new Apple products becoming mobile, and the increased expense associated with purchasing newer technologies, is it worth paying the extra for the AppleCare service for each of your items?

AppleCare is an Apple-provided extended warranty and support plan which extends the standard one-year warranty on Apple products and also provides the consumer with free telephone technical support should they encounter any problems. It can be purchased to cover most Apple products including iMacs, iPads, iPods, MacBooks and iPhones. The length of protection that AppleCare provides is different depending on which product you purchase.

One condition that is frequently overlooked is that it can be purchased at any time during the warranty period Continue reading

Buying A New Mac?

Last week I was asked a question by a friend who is a Mac virgin.

“I’m sick of PC’s.  Should I get a new MacBook Pro with a separate display or an iMac?”

Now there’s a question without an easy answer.  And it just became more difficult with the launch of the new 27 inch Apple display, which offers the same amount of screen space as a 27 inch iMac. From my own perspective, I’m gonna have to make the same decision pretty soon, so let me give it a shot.

The MacBook Pro (I’m lumping the MacBook and MacBook Pro together since they have grown so close over the past year, they are practically hitched) is a phenomenal laptop.  Comparing it to an iMac side by side, the MacBook Pro is obviously slower in terms of processing power, offers less storage and less graphics power, but on the other hand is upgradeable and has portability.  So the question that has to be asked is, how much are you willing to pay to be able to move your computer system between locations?

And these are the two things that will factor most in your decision.  Portability and cost.  Continue reading

New iOS4.1 Software Is Susceptible To Jailbreak

The new iOS4.1 software update for iPhone contains an exploit which can be used to jailbreak devices running the software.  The news, coming just hours after iOS4.1 was released, means that users who wish to jailbreak their iPhones or iPods running iOS4.1 will be able to do so in the future.  While no jailbreak is available yet, the group of hackers known as pod2g are currently working on it.

Apparently the exploit is located in the boot ROM which will make it extraordinarily difficult for Apple to issue a software patch that would fix the problem from their end.

While this is great news for jailbreakers, the actual jailbreak still requires work before it is released, so if you like your iDevices as cracked as a beaten egg, you’d better hold off on updating to iOS 4.1 as it will remove your previous jailbreak efforts.

With the launch of iOS 4.2 due in November for iPad, Continue reading

Walkthrough – How To Opt Out Of Location Tracking In Facebook

With the release of the new ‘Places’ feature on Facebook yesterday, some folk may be worried that their friends are tagging them in places where they ought not to be.

Privacy. The bane of Facebook.

Luckily, those kind people over at CultofMac have put up a great walkthrough on how to opt-out of the Places feature. Head on over there to keep your location private.

While you are there it is worth checking all your other Facebook setting to make sure that you aren’t sharing things you don’t want to. Log out, and look at your profile from the point of view of an outsider and look at the info you are sharing with your friends as well.

Has anyone yet figured out why Facebook makes it so difficult to guard your privacy? For a site that relies on users sharing personal information, it certainly doesn’t do a great job of making privacy settings obvious. This ‘Opt-In’ attitude is not healthy.

If you accidentally got tagged in a strip club then

How To Test If Your iPhone 4 Has Antenna Problems

If you have recently purchased the new iPhone 4 and you aren’t sure if the antenna reception has a fault or not, then you should perform this quick test.

Place a call to a friend and put him/her on speaker.

During the call, lay the phone flat on the table and after 30 seconds, count how many bars you have

Then pick up the phone in your left hand and grip it normally.

Carry on talking, and if your phone either dramatically drops in call quality, the number of bars displayed significantly drops or, quite simply, the call itself is dropped, then you have an issue.

If you aren’t happy with the quality of your iPhone 4 and feel that it is a faulty unit then there are a number of steps you can take.

If you have tested positive then

Top Programs For Downloading Torrents On A Mac

There are several solid torrent clients for Mac OS X. Depending on what you want to use them for, there are options for everyone, but you should simply give a few of them a try and decide which one you would like to settle on.

To help you out, here are 7 of the best in no particular order:

Transmission (recommended client) – A great lightweight client that is updated very regularly and with a nice interface. Can still take a long time to quit however.

uTorrent (recommended client) – The main alternative to Transmission, uTorrent is as lightweight as they come but still incredibly functional (it can automatically adjust traffic so that your internet connection isn’t slowed down – a problem with previous editions of uTorrent).

Xtorrent P2P – Not the most stable client but has its upsides such as a good search function. Unfortunately costs $25 for the full version.

Azureus, now called Vuze – A good client for those who are new to downloading torrents Continue reading

How Does The iOS4 Security Hole Affect iPhone 4 Users?

Since the jailbreak for iPhone 4 was announced, reports have been circulating that there is a large hole in iOS4 that would allow malicious hackers to gain access to an iPhone 4 device and install software.

The security flaw in iOS4 exploits the manner in which the Safari web browser in iOS4 manipulates PDF files and several security experts have described it as a very dangerous problem. Apple has not yet offered a fix for the flaw but is apparently looking into it. Unfortunately, until they do offer a patch, users with iPhone 4 devices remain susceptible to third party attack, especially now that this flaw is so well known.

If you are concerned about this flaw and don’t wish to wait for the Apple fix then, ironically, if you jailbreak your device using the website (which exploits the Safari flaw) and install an app package from Cydia called ‘PDF Loading Warner’, you can attenuate the threat. The app does not completely fix the security flaw but does warn you if Safari tries to load a PDF file which, by circumventing the normal iPhone security procedures, can result in the security hole being exploited.

If you are feeling exploited and not in a good way then

How To Get A Job With Apple

So you want to get a job working for Apple?

There are many possible routes that you can take to get in, but unfortunately, no hard and fast rules exist for success. In this article, I will highlight several ways that you could strongly increase your chances of working for the brightest and best consumer electronics corporation in the world.

The first decision you need to make is whether your aim is to work in Corporate or Retail. These are two very distinct areas of the Apple corporation and will dictate which career path through the company you would take.

The second thing you need to do, is to honestly and impartially assess yourself as a potential employee, from the point of view of Apple. You have to be completely neutral and pretty hard on yourself when you do this. Because Apple is such a popular company to work for, positions are highly desirable and sought after. Therefore, Apple has the pick of the crop when it comes to taking on outstanding individuals to fill positions. You have to stand out from the crowd, take the extra step and set yourself apart from others. But you shouldn’t expect to be rewarded or congratulated for being an outstanding candidate – that is simply expected. Your enthusiasm, your drive to be the most exceptional individual you can be, and your readiness to deliver superior outcomes, will be the strongest assets in your career.

Apple Job Site
Your first port of call is the Apple Jobs Website. As with everything that Apple does, this site is spectacular and full of information and opportunities. The site details all of the Divisions that make up Apple Corporate as well as all of the potential positions that can be found as part of Apple Retail.

If you are a student or a recent graduate, then scroll down to the bottom of each page and you find sections dealing with the Apple Intern Program as well as the Apple Graduate Program. These sections are very informative and provide clues on the type of person that Apple is looking for. For example, if you are a student developer, you have the opportunity to join the Apple Developer Program and win a scholarship to attend the WWDC. That would be a fantastic way to bring yourself to Apple’s attention.

Application & Interview
If you find the role that excites you and you believe, strongly believe, that you are ideal for it, then you can start getting your application together. While I’m not going to go into specifics about each type of role, there are a few things that you should do.

The first is to make sure that your CV is well presented, comprehensive without chatter, and filled with keywords relating to your experience and the type of role that would suit you. These keywords will jump out at someone who is assessing your CV. Remember that your CV is the first and only thing that Apple will see before they take your application further so it must be perfect. If it’s not, then you are wasting your time.

It’s easy to extrapolate from Apple’s public image that the company has a minute attention to detail and strives for innovation and perfection. If your CV isn’t up to scratch then it will be noticed. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t apply for a post if you don’t quite have the experience, but simply to make sure that, at least on paper, you look good. If your CV looks like a good fit for the company, then you’ve passed another hurdle. There is no right or wrong way to do it, but it should be accessible and professional.

Once you have submitted your electronic application then sit back and wait to be contacted. There is simply no point in pestering the company.

Secondly, if you happen to get called for an interview, prepare yourself by doing research in the area in which you hope to work. Read around your subject and try to get a feeling for Apple’s way of thinking. It’s likely that you will not be able to find out a lot of information from Apple itself, as the company is so secretive, but if you read around your subject and develop your knowledge in the historical and contemporary aspects then you will at least be able to talk about it with some authority and enthusiasm.

Furthermore, Apple is first, and foremost, a company of innovation with the brightest people working for it. So it’s to be expected that their collective ideas and thinking on a subject, and tangents of that subject, will be light years ahead of yours. This isn’t a reflection on you, but when you are applying to a company like Apple who can define the way we interact with the world, you have to expect that they’ve got a few thoughts up their sleeve. It’s in their nature to be at the forefront of innovation, and it’s how they have got to where they are.

Finally, don’t bluff or try to create an image of yourself that isn’t accurate. It will shine through and will be discovered very rapidly. The recruitment process will not be a slap-dash affair. It will be comprehensive, intelligent and wide-ranging, and you won’t be able to fake it. So, only go through it if you are a genuine candidate. Otherwise it’s a waste of your own time.

The Offer
The best way I know of achieving an objective is to visualize yourself doing it. Use this technique in your preparation and pay attention to the details. And before you know it, you may even receive an offer of employment from Apple Inc.

Best of luck.

You don’t need to be a Genius to
