Apple Offers Discount On Refurbished iPod Nano

Apple is currently offering a $10 discount on sixth generation refurbished iPod nano (8GB) devices. The Online Apple Store was updated yesterday to add the time limited offer, offering the refurbished devices for $99 (regular price $109). Not all colors are available but you can still get a black, silver, blue, green or orange one for under a hundred bucks versus the regular price of $129 for a brand new one.

It’s not clear when the offer ends, but if you are in the market for a refurbished nano then this is a great deal. As always they are covered by a one year Apple limited warranty and offer a 14 day returns policy. One restriction, however, is that engraving or gift wrap is not available.

Apple Offering Special Limited Time Sale On Original iPad

Apple has slashed prices on the original, first generation iPad so that consumers can now pick up a 64GB refurbished iPad 1 for only $399 which represents $100 of the previous price. Spotted today by reader Ian, the company has changed the ‘refurbished iPad’ section of the online store to represent the new prices. The sale is accompanied by the text ‘Special Time Limited Price’ so it’s unclear as to how long these prices will be in effect, but for people potentially looking to get into the iPad ecosystem, the prices are pretty amazing. You can see below how far the reductions on the refurbished devices go;

  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi 64GB – $399 (previously $499)
  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 32GB – $399 (previously $499)
  • Refurbished iPad Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB – $499 (previously $499)

Apple Issues Security Update For Snow Leopard To Remove MacDefender Software

Apple has just released a software security update for OS X 10.6.7 Snow Leopard which will scan Mac systems for the MacDefender malware software and remove all traces of it. The security update (2011-003) was originally expected to be part of OS X 10.6.8 which was recently seeded to developers but Apple has obviously pushed it out early to deal with the problem. The information on the security update can be found here.

“Security Update 2011-003 provides additional protection by checking for the MacDefender malware and its known variants. If MacDefender malware is found, the system will quit this malware, delete any persistent files, and correct any modifications made to configuration or login files.”

Find iPad 2 Stock In Apple Stores Using Our ‘iPad 2 Stock Locator’

We have launched an iPad 2 stock locator for every single Apple Store around the USA. We noticed a trend in our comments that readers did not have a central mechanism for either sharing where the iPad 2 was in stock, or where it was not in stock. Thus, the system we have created is very simple (and rather rudimentary).

If you hear from Apple retail staff that the iPad 2 is going to be in stock either later that day or the following day then place a vote on our system at the corresponding Apple Store.  If you purchase an iPad 2 from the Apple Store then place a vote that day. If enough people contribute, then users can use the system to find where and when they are most likely to find an iPad 2.  The votes will be reset every day at 10am (when most people will know about iPad 2 stock in their local store).

The page can be found here – iPad 2 Stock Locator

Haven’t Got An iPad 2 Yet? Order And Stalk

If you weren’t one of the lucky few to get hold of an iPad 2 yesterday and today you were perhaps disappointed to find that all Apple Stores and third party sellers were out of stock then you may be in for a long wait. But there is one thing that you can do to ensure that you get the iPad you want as soon as possible.

The main problem with securing an iPad at a retail store in the early days of release  is that even if the store gets new stock in, you either have to be very lucky to catch it and you have to be even luckier to catch the specific model you want, and with eighteen combinations, that cuts down your chances even more.

Apple Offers $100 Refund To Customers Who Recently Purchased An iPad

The iPad 2 launched yesterday at the same price points the original iPad and the price of the first generation device was subsequently dropped by Apple by $100.  This means that customers can now get a hold of a 16GB Wi-Fi iPad for $399.  However, for those consumers who had avoided looking at Apple news sites for the past two weeks and had invested in a first generation iPad, Apple is now offering a $100 refund to compensate for the price drop (via ElectricPig.co.uk)

The restrictions on the refund are as follows.  The customer must have proof i.e. a sales receipt that they purchased a first generation iPad in the 14 days prior to applying for the refund.  To notify Apple that you would like a refund, you have to contact the Apple Store Customer Service department on 1-800-676-2775 within the 14 day period (via MacRumors). However, there is something that you can do which is potentially a lot more interesting.

Firefox 4 For Mac Gets Close To Release

With the news yesterday that the Firefox web browser has become the most popular browser in Europe, Mac users will be excited to hear that the latest version of Firefox, version 4, is nearing release. Mozilla dropped an early Christmas present on December 21 when they unleashed the latest beta release (b8) of version 4 on the public.

Firefox 4 has been my default browser for the past couple of weeks and it’s a great improvement on Firefox 3.6 with a gorgeous new user interface and great responsiveness.  Is it snappier? Well, who can say but it looks and feels great.  The latest version incorporates many changes including a new and improved javascript engine, faster benchmark performance, full graphics hardware acceleration and the new Firefox sync function for use with mobile devices.  Continue reading

New Trojan Virus Can Infect Apple Mac OSX Systems

A new Java-based Trojan horse has emerged which can infect computers running Apple OSX software. The Trojan activates a Java applet which downloads an installer when users click on a link that says “Is this you in this video?”

The link can now be found on several social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

Two security firms have posted bulletins on the Trojan with SecureMac stating that the worm is a critical threat whereas Intego are taking a more conservative approach by saying that there is a low risk at the moment Continue reading
