Rumor: 17 Inch MacBook Pro May Be Discontinued In Revamped MacBook Line-Up

A new forecast from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is suggesting that lackluster sales of the 17 inch MacBook Pro are making Apple reconsider their offering of the device (via MacRumors). The analyst reporting from KGI Securities, says that the company will likely discontinue the MacBook Pro in the 17 inch configuration. The analyst also says that, early in Q3 of 2012, the company will be rolling out a brand new design of MacBook model that will have the best features of the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air.

Apple has been rumored to be revamping the MacBook Pro line for some time and many reports have focused upon the idea that Apple will cease to produce two lines of MacBook and will instead aim to offer a unified MacBook line-up that will merge the best features of the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. The thin, light and fast design of the MacBook Air has achieved significant sales since it was introduced in October 2010. However, the Pro level MacBook Pro also holds attraction for many people and as such, a new thinner design is eagerly awaited as the existing model has been around for almost four years.

Rumor: LiquidMetal iPhone 5 At WWDC In June

A new rumor has popped up from ETNews.com, a Korean website which is claiming that Apple will utilize Liquidmetal alloys in the iPhone to make it even more resistant to damage and breaking. The site is suggesting that the next generation iPhone will have rear panel that is made entirely of a new alloy, termed liquid metal in the report, with Apple ditching the current glass rear panel construction.

Apple purchased the rights to use Liquidmetal in 2010, a hard wearing material that is very durable, has a high tensile strength, and is hard wearing. It was unclear what Apple was going to use the material in initially, but many people had thought that it would emerge at some point in the casings for an iPhone, an iPad or even in the MacBook line-up.

Rumor: 15 Inch MacBook Pro Update Soon

The MacBook Pro is currently undergoing some shortages in resellers which may be an indication of an updated version coming soon. Spotted by AppleInsider, third party resellers of the MacBook Pro are starting to show some major shortages in the stock, perhaps most notable being Best Buy who have actually gone as far as halting all online orders for the 2.4 GHz 15 inch model which is a pretty good indication that this model could soon be discontinued. Other sellers such as J&R Electronics and MacConnection are also experiencing shortages of the 15 inch model of the MacBook Pro.

The news comes as rumors swirl about a new 15 inch completely redesigned version of the MacBook Pro which is thought to take design influences from the MacBook Air. While a revamp to the MacBook Pro line has been rumored for a while, the shortages of stock and the expectation of an April launch for the revamped 15 inch version could point towards something significant.

Rumor: iPhone 5 To Sport Unibody Design, 4 Inch Screen And A5X Processor

A flurry of rumors have emerged surrounding the next generation iPhone 5 as the world turns its eyes to the next major iOS device release. The main rumor stems from a report by Brian White, analyst at Topeka Captial Markets who is suggesting that, as a result of a trip to Asia for some friendly banter with a number of companies in the Apple supply chain, the iPhone 5 will have a 4 inch screen, versus the 3.5 inches seen in the current models (via MacRumors). He also suggests that the device will see a major redesign, with a unibody case, and that it will be 4G compatible.

The 4 inch display has been discussed at length previously, as increasing the screen size is more complicated than simply attaching a 4 inch touchscreen to the front of a redesigned device. The larger screen size would mean that developers would have to rewrite all their apps to cope with a different resolution, if the iPhone 5 were to retain the current Retina Display pixel density. Or Apple could simply keep the resolution the same but drop the pixel density from 326 pixels per inch to a lower density of around 285 pixels per inch, which may be the easier option and would still be higher than the pixel density of the third generation iPad at 264 ppi.

New Intel Processors Set Off Rumors Of New Macs

A new report has emerged suggesting that Apple will be introducing new models of the iMac in June of this year. The launch, reported by the Taiwanese Economic Daily News (via Digitimes) is apparently a reflection of recent news that Intel would be releasing its new Ivy Bridge processors at the end of this month. The source of the information is stated to be the Apple supply chain. The report also suggests that a new version of the MacBook Pro would be launched in mid 2012.

The report also follows on from multiple rumors that a 15 inch MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air-like form factor would be launching in the April-June timeframe. The new 15 inch model is also rumored to sport the latest Ivy Bridge processor and seems to utilize the same ‘supply-chain’ sources.

Rumor: Apple Playing With A Smaller iPad

Apple is apparently toying with idea of releasing an iPad with 7.85 inch display that has a resolution of 1024 x 768, according to author of Daring Fireball, John Gruber. Speaking on The Talk Show podcast, Gruber reports that he has numerous sources suggest that Apple is playing with the idea of releasing a smaller iPad and that they have prototypes of the smaller device in their labs. However, he is quick to point out that the device may never be released as many prototypes made by Apple quite simply never make it to market.

It is known that Apple has built alternative sizes of the iPad as Steve Jobs announced when asked about choosing the size of the iPad. At the time Jobs suggested that the 9.7 screen of the current iPad was the ideal size and that the company had no plans to release a smaller or larger one, but recent rumors seem to suggest that the company is taking the smaller sized device seriously.

Rumor: Random Foxconn Dude Suggests iPhone 5 In June

A new report sourced from a random Foxconn employee is suggesting that the iPhone 5 could pop up as early as June. The report comes from Macotakara who have spotted on TV Tokyo that Foxconn, the company that Apple contracts to assemble iOS devices, are apparently recruiting up to 18,000 new works with a view to getting the iPhone 5 assembled and ready for a June launch.

There have been rumors in the past suggesting that Apple would be deviating from their minimum year long interval between iPhone releases to release an iPhone 5 in June, but coming so soon after the release of the iPhone 4S in October 2011, is it likely that the company would release a new iPhone only 8 months after the release of the last one.

Rumor: New Facebook iPad App On The Way?

Facebook could be working on a new enhanced version of their iPad app according to a small promotional advertisement on the iOS App Store. Spotted by one of their sharp eyed readers, MacRumors points towards the advertisement which appeared in the promotional blocks in the New and Noteworthy section of the App Store (pictured above). The block has the text ‘Facebook: Enhanced for the new iPad’.

Whether or not this points towards a major revamp of the app or simply one that refers to a Retina Display enabled version of the app remains to be seen. What is desperately needed, however, is a version of the app that allows users to take advantage of the full functionality of Facebook without having to endure the multiple bugs that are currently plaguing the Facebook app, which is a strange thing to be put out from the second most popular site on the internet.

Rumor: Apple Shifts New 13 and 15 Inch MacBook Pro Into Production

A new rumor is suggesting that the next iteration of the new MacBook Pro has reached production phase and that the 15 inch model will be produced during the month of April. The report comes via the erratically accurate Digitimes who are suggesting that while the 15 inch model starts production next month, the 13 inch model will not start production until June, despite more demand for that model.

The start of production in April correlates with the recent news that Intel would be releasing their next generation Ivy Bridge processors which will likely be found in the next generation MacBook Pro models.  That announcement is due to take place in the 4th week of April.

Rumor: New iPhone With LTE Will Be Released In October 2012

A new report is suggesting that the next iPhone, perhaps called the iPhone 5, will be released in October 2012 and will be LTE enabled. The report also suggests that the device will likely have a 3.5 inch screen, as per the existing iPhone models, but could have a much smaller dock connector. The report comes from iMore who have apparently heard that the new device will not deviate substantially in screen size although they suggest that while 3.5 inches is likely, the report is vague on firm details and, as such, there is room for movement.

The release date of October 2012 would follow on from the release of the iPhone 4S in October of 2011 and is certainly consistent with other rumors that have circulated. This is also true of the news that the new device would be LTE enabled, a technology that Apple is certainly embracing after the launch of the LTE enabled third generation iPad.
