Apple Interested In 4G Enabled MacBooks

The eagle eyed spotters at Patently Apple have uncovered a pretty awesome patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office today which shows that the company is still interested in the possibility of bringing integrated 4G connectivity to the MacBook line-up. The patent concerns the integration of a 4G antenna into the panel surrounding the screen in a MacBook in a conductive cavity, allowing for connection of the MacBook to 4G networks without having to use an external USB dongle or 4G wireless hotspot.

The design of the integrated connectivity is apparently focused upon keeping the antenna away from portions of the device which could potentially interfere with 4G radio signals, such as the display. It is also the latest in a long line of patents secured by Apple on a similar subject i.e. the integration of a cellular antenna into the display of a MacBook.

Apple Testing Banners On iCloud.com

Apple is apparently testing a new banner notification system for iCloud.com and seems to have revealed part of the test on the iCloud website, according to a new report from MacRumors. According to the image that they captured (displayed above), a test message is sometimes appearing at the top of the page on iCloud.com for some users. The message shows the text ‘Default Title for English’ indicating that it’s something that has perhaps slipped out during testing and is not yet fully implemented.

It is also worth noting that the icon that is next to the message suggests that this could be a notification system for system messages, perhaps for iCloud status updates. However, the company may be looking to implement banner notifications for all of the services that are offered by iCloud, such as Mail, Calendar or shared iWork documents.

Penultimate Gets Loved Up By Evernote

The rather awesome writing and drawing app Penultimate has been purchased by newly minted Evernote, it was announced today. The obviously-pleased Evernote was the one to make the announcement (read their blog post here) stating that they are “thrilled to announce that we’ve acquired the company and that Penultimate is now part of the Evernote family”.

Evernote obviously has good taste as Penultimate is the fourth best selling paid iPad app of all time. The good news is that the new owners will not be embarking on a crusade to make the Penultimate app part of Evernote. Penultimate will apparently stay a separate application, but will receive many ‘Evernote-y’ improvements to search and synchronization. On the other hand, Penultimate reater Ben Zotto will be heading up the effort to get handwriting and digital ink functionality into other Evernote products.

Rumor: Supply Constraints Result In Apple Swapping iPhone 4 For iPhone 4S

Stocks of the 16GB iPhone are reportedly a little low at the moment and a new report is suggesting that Apple Genius Bars are having to fall back upon stocks of the iPhone 4S in order to meet demand for replacement units. 9to5Mac is reporting that when some customers have taken a faulty iPhone 4 to some Genius Bars in Apple retail stores, Apple have been unable to replace them with identical models.  Instead, the stores have been instructed to issue replacement units of the iPhone 4S in the event that there are no matching units of the iPhone 4 in stock.

The report also suggests that not all stores are facing the stock constraints and that Apple may quickly catch up with the low stock levels, so it’s not like there’s going to be a sudden rush of people trying to get their iPhone 4 swapped with an iPhone 4S.

Apple Looking To Acquire The Domain ‘iPhone5.com’

Apple is reportedly looking to secure ownership of the domain ‘iPhone5.com, according to a new discovery by Fusible (via MacRumors). The company has apparently filed a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization, who are conducting an investigation into whether they can gain control of the domain. The investigation is currently ongoing but given that the company has historically managed to secure iPhone4.com and iPhone4S.com, it seems that the odds are in their favor.

New Version Of The iPad 2 Has Better Battery Life

Since the launch of the new iPad, the iPad 2 has perhaps taken a back seat to the glory of Retina Displays, A5X processors, 5 megapixel cameras, LTE and dictation. However, a recent discovery has revealed that a revised version of the iPad 2 packs a little more punch than first thought. According to AnandTech, ever since the launch of the new iPad Apple has quietly been shipping a revised version of the iPad 2 which utilizes an A5 processor with slightly different construction, resulting in, surprisingly, up to two hours more battery life than the previous version of the iPad 2.

The A5 processor in the new iPad 2 is a 32nm A5, compared to the 45nm A5 found in the older version of the iPad 2. This means that the processor has the same performance but the die-shrunk 32nm A5 uses less power for the same speed. This translates to two hours more battery life which means that the new version of the iPad 2 could potentially offer twelve hours of use versus the ten hours advertised by Apple. It’s actually likely to be even more because many people have found that the older version of the iPad 2 can run for well over ten hours and that figure is simply the minimum specification given by Apple.

Rumor: Next Gen iPhone 5 Has A Metal Back Panel, And Yet A Glass Back Panel

A new report has appeared from iLounge editor Jeremy Horwitz, which is claiming that the next generation iPhone will have a larger display, and a combination of a metal and glass rear panel. The report also suggests that the new device will be around 20% thinner and will employ a new small dock connector. The reduced size of the dock connector is to allow the device to be thinner but slightly taller to enable the incorporation of a 4 inch display.

Horwitz, while predicting with some accuracy the form factor of the iPad 3 prior to launch, is making a bit of a confusing case for how the next-gen iPhone is going to look. While his most recent report suggests that Apple will be employing a metal rear panel, a similar report was also presented a few weeks ago which characterized the next iPhone as having a Gorilla Glass rear panel. Perhaps the rear panel is metal with a see through glass panel? Or perhaps half and half, like a MacBook Pro or iMac.

Forget A Thinner iPhone 5 – What About Power?

When you look at your iPhone 4S, do you see a powerful device with a lighting-fast, well designed user interface, beautiful display and perfect form factor? Or, do you see a slow-ass, chunky piece of crap that is limited by imperfection. Personally, the former description seems most appropriate, since the majority of opinions and retail popularity seem to indicate that the iPhone 4S is the best iPhone Apple has ever released.

That said, there is one area of the iPhone 4S that does require consideration as we move to a state of high anticipation about the iPhone 5. Many of the mockups of the iPhone 5 that have circulated, have suggested that the device will have a thinner form factor and curved back, essentially reducing the interior volume. If this was the case then this would certainly be an issue as perhaps the only complaint that I have about the iPhone 4S, is the battery life.
