Apple Marketing The New iPad As 4G, But Only In USA & Canada

New reports are suggesting that trading standards organizations centered in Europe are looking into whether Apple should actually be marketing the new iPad as a 4G device. The reaction follows Australian sales regulators who suggesting that Apple was misleading the public by advertising the iPad as 4G compatible in Australia, despite the device being incompatible with the LTE networks in that country. Apple has offered refunds to disgruntled customers who may be unhappy with their purchase but it’s more than likely that few people will be taking Apple up on the offer.

Unfortunately, Swedish and UK authorities are now looking into the matter, as to whether the iPad, advertised as 4G in both of those countries, should be advertised as such when there are no networks that would support 4G on the device in those countries. This therefore raises some questions about whether it should be even called a 4G device in those countries.

New iPad Warms The Heart…And The Hand?

The new iPad runs a little hotter than the previous generation, to the tune of 5 degrees Celcius or 10 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the site Tweakers.net. Using a thermal imaging camera the site has discovered that the case temperature of the third generation iPad tops out at around 33.6°C after five minutes of running benchmarking software, whereas the iPad 2 hit 28.3°C. Anecdotal reports from users are suggesting that the small increase in temperature is barely noticeable for most people and is generally much cooler than the heat output on the bottom of your average laptop.

Apple has issued a statement to the site The Loop which says “The new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications…If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare.”

Apple Has A ‘Record’ Weekend

Apple today held an investor conference call in which CEO Tim Cook has noted that the launch of the new iPad set a new record and that the company was thrilled with the response to the new device. However, the company is not releasing any figures as to how many units of the new iPad were sold.

While the response to the new iPad may well have set a new record, they didn’t offer any clarification on exactly what the record was. It could either refer to the launch of previous iPads or indeed any previous mobile Apple device such as the iPhone or the iPad. Certainly, anecdotal reports from shoppers around the US have indicated that Apple has done a very good job keeping up with the demand for the iPad in Apple Retail Stores, with lines nowhere near the size of those for the iPad 2.

Rumor: 15 Inch MacBook Air For April Launch

Apple is reportedly preparing to release a 15 inch edition of the popular MacBook Air with a launch as soon as April, according to a new rumor from Electric Pig. The company is reportedly looking to release a 15 inch Air that could remove the need for the MacBook Pro in a similar size. The source of the information is a Mac accessory manufacturer who suggests that the release of such a device would mean that the 13 inch and 15 inch versions of the MacBook Pro would no longer be needed and that the 17 inch would be the only MacBook Pro to survive the transition.

The report is suggesting that the new device would have characteristics identical to the existing MacBook Air with ports on both sides, no optical drive, no ethernet port and the familiar thin Air-like form factor. The changes would reportedly be implemented at some point in April, including the changes to the MacBook Pro line.

Shipping Times Slip For New iPad And New Apple TV

Following on from Apple’s media event yesterday in which the company announced that the new iPad and the new Apple TV would be available for pre-order immediately, shipping times have started to slip for the new, and obviously highly popular, devices. When the Apple Store was eventually updated with the new models, the initial ship times had suggested that the new iPad would be delivered on March 16th. However, the new estimates on the online Apple Store are suggesting that the device will not ship until March 19 at the earliest.

The white model of the new iPad seems to be either more popular or in shorter supply than the black model as shipping times for the white iPad are being hit first. In addition, the delivery date for the new Apple TV had also been March 16, only hours after the Online Store reopened. However, the most recent estimates suggest that the device will now not ship for 1 to 2 weeks, suggesting that delivery will not now take place on March 16.

Rumor: Brand New iTunes Store And App Store To Launch This Year

A new report is suggesting that Apple is hard at work revamping the user interface and structure of the iTunes and iOS App Store fronts and that the new UI will launch later this year. According to 9to5Mac, the new interface will make it easier for consumers to find and download quality new apps and music, putting continued focus on purchasing, downloading and consuming content.

The site is reporting that the new interface will be more simple than the current iTunes interface and will be much more focused upon interactivity and the user experience. The new interface will likely be designed to reflect the increasing importance of the App Store in the Apple ecosystem. Lawsuit Settlement Means iPhone 4 Buyers In Line For Free Bumper Or $15

When the iPhone 4 was first released, there was a lot of furor over the fact that if you held the iPhone handset in such a way i.e. by grasping your hand over the device and bridging the two antennas, there was a noticeable drop in signal strength. Despite the fact that the phenomenon occured in almost every smartphone, a significant amount of media coverage meant that Apple was forced to hold a press conference and address the issue. Unsatisfied with the response, a number of consolidated lawsuits against Apple were launched.

The lawsuits claim that Apple was “misrepresenting and concealing material information in the marketing, advertising, sale, and servicing of its iPhone 4–particularly as it relates to the quality of the mobile phone antenna and reception and related software”. However, as of Friday, CNET reports that a preliminary settlement for these lawsuits has now been reached with Apple now having to offer US residents who have already purchased an iPhone 4 either a free bumper or $15 in cash as compensation.
