Rumor: A 4K Display From Apple

Mac Pro
A new speculative report is today pointing towards Apple working on 4K resolution displays with AU Optronics as a potential supplier, according to AmongTech (via MacRumors). The report notes that AU Optronics has recently introduced both 27 inch and 32 inch 4K resolution displays which offer a 4K standard resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is a standard that is supported by the new Thunderbolt 2 interface which supports 20Gbit/s data channeling.

Apple notes on their website that the new Mac Pro, set to be released this December, will be able to run three 4K resolution displays simultaneously. As such, many consumers and power users wil be eagerly waiting for Apple to release the next generation of Thunderbolt displays. There is no indication that Apple is indeed working on 4K displays but given the popularity of the existing Apple Thunderbolt displays, it is likely the next generation is being worked on and will offer a significant upgrade.

I don’t doubt apple is working on new displays and there could be a 4k offering. But I do doubt this is the company they re working with. Apple doesn’t talk or let partners talk. This rumor is likely just name dropping to make the alleged partner look good by association.

My current Mac Pro is pretty fast. I’m not really having performance issues.

That big screen is what I want and I don’t expect to buy a new Mac Pro until one is available.
