Highly Anticipated Mailbox Email App For iOS Is Released

A new e-mail app called Mailbox launched today from developers Orchestra, and has generated substantial interest. The app uses a novel virtual ‘waiting line’ whereby the app itself can be downloaded from the iOS App Store, but users need to enter a reservation number, or place a reservation in order to enable the functionality of the app. Reservations have been open since December and have generated a massive amount of interest as, at time of writing, there are in excess of 300,000 people waiting for an invitation.

The app itself is designed to make e-mail ‘light, fast and mobile friendly’. You can swipe each message to slot it into the trash or an archive, as well as easily viewing conversations in a chat interface. Perhaps the best feature is the ability to ‘snooze’ an e-mail until later, making it a powerful tool for those who deal with many e-mails on a daily basis. The primary aim of the app is, therefore, to attain an inbox of zero messages to deal with.

The app is available on the iOS App Store now, free of charge, and you can either make a reservation or input your reservation number to see your spot in line.

    You’re leaving out some crucial information here.

    First, this app is Gmail only. It’s no surprise that Gmail users might not like Apple’s built-in app as Gmail works differently from most other email types. So if you are a Google nut or a Gmail afficianado, then this app is for you, but for the average person, it not only won’t work at the moment, it’s not likely to be anything they want or like if it did work.

    Secondly, it’s an app based on the idea of “Inbox zero” which is a hipster business dude’s concept. I handle hundreds of emails a day and have never subscribed to the “Inbox zero” dogma, nor does anyone I know.

    You should at least point out that that there are many ways to handle your email, many different “theories” as to how one should do it, and that the *philosophy* (Inbox zero) behind the app while good, is definitely not for everyone, nor universally ascribed to.
