Apple has today announced that the iOS App Store has hit the 40 billion downloads mark since its launch in 2008 with almost half of those downloads occurring in 2012. The company also noted that there are now over 500 million active App Store accounts and that December offered some crazy downloading activity with over two billion downloads occurring during that month alone. The figures quoted actually exclude re-downloads and updates, so that’s 40 billion purchases.
Interestingly, the press release also alludes to the amount paid out to Developers over the period of the App Store being in existence, with over $7 billion in sales. The Store now offers in excess of 775,000 iOS apps in total with over 300,000 of those being natively designed for the iPad.
