A new report today is suggesting that Google is less than confident that a new Maps app for iOS devices will ever make it on to the iOS App Store. The report comes from The Guardian, who are saying that sources within Google are ‘not optimistic’ that Apple would allow a new Maps app from Google on to the iOS App Store. The app is apparently in the final stages of development and would essentially be ready for shipping by the end of this year.
Of course, this could simply be rumors and hypotheses from within Google and Apple may actually end up approving such an app. This is particularly true since Tim Cook recently pointed towards the Google Maps website as an interim alternative to the Apple Maps app.
Actually, there’s not much of a reason why Apple would reject the Google Maps app since it offers alternative functionality to their own Maps app. They have already approved Google Voice and Google Chrome. It’s likely that Google Maps will follow suit.
