Now and again, the odd Apple prototype pops up on an auction site offering a glimpse inside the minds of Apple engineers and they can often be good value to Apple collectors. Today, a rather interesting piece of Apple history appeared on eBay in the form of a prototype PowerBook 3400, codenamed Hooper (stuntman or Jaws scientist?). The prototype unit, designated DVT for Development Validity Test, is a nice representation of the PowerBook 3400, a predecessor to the PowerBook G3 (continuing with the film theme, recognizable to fans of GWTDT).
While this is a good buy for an Apple collector (it’s only AU $50 at the moment), it sadly doesn’t boot so probably isn’t an ideal purchase for some classic word processing. It is, however, stamped by the PowerBook Development Team and offers a look at how the company constructed their prototype devices back in 1996.
