Rumor: New MacBook Pro Models Appear In Apple Inventory

Stocks of the current model MacBook Pro are apparently getting a little tight in several suppliers around the globe, according to a new report from 9to5Mac. Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly, the shortages in MacBook Pro stock coincide with the appearance of several new listings for brand new MacBook Pro models that have appeared in Apple’s own internal inventory system.

While details on the new models are pretty scarce, what has been revealed is that the new models will retain the same screen sizes as the current MacBook Pro models i.e. 13 inch, 15 inch and 17 inch. The report suggests that the new models will represent a very minor refresh likely including improvements in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors as well as novel Bluetooth 4.0 technology as found in the latest MacBook Air models.

This rumor follows on from previous reports which have suggested that Apple was preparing to completely refresh the MacBook Pro line with a dramatic new design that would essentially look a little like the MacBook Air except in a 15 and 17 inch screen size.  Certainly, the popularity of the MacBook Air has to have Apple wondering whether dropping the optical drive with a view to saving space and moving to a new thinner design would be a good idea.

In addition, the hefty speed bumps offered by migrating to Solid State Drives (SSD) instead of hard drive storage may be the future of the MacBook Pro line, particularly in light of the novel iCloud storage options for media.  However, with this report suggesting that the new MacBook Pro’s will only be a very minor update, it’s unlikely that this sort of major change will be happening at this stage.

I have been CD-less for 3 odd years. It’s obvious that removing the optical drive and offering an external USB for those who really want it would be perfect. Here’s to hoping. Give me a quad i7 with the Air’s Flash options and I’ll snap it up in an instant.
