Apple will reportedly be hosting the iPhone 4S / 5 launch event for the media on their own doorstop at the Cupertino campus, according to information from AllThingsD. The event will apparently be hosted in a small media center in the Apple headquarters, rather than in an external event venue such as the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) or the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Both SF venues have previously been used for Apple announcements.
The reasons surrounding the use of the Apple campus aren’t clear yet but it should be noted that both the Moscone and the YBCA have events booked for October 4th, the day that the company is expected to hold the launch event for next generation iPhone. AllThingsD postulates that it could also be due to the fact that the release date for the next gen iPhone is too much a moving target, although this is unlikely as the media event is simply one factor in the iPhone launch. Historically, Apple product launches are so carefully choreographed down to the minute, with web pages, retail advertising and shipments all being coordinated for a seamless operation.
The site also notes that the Apple campus could be chosen for symbolic reasons as this is new CEO Tim Cook’s first standalone event without Steve Jobs and, as such, the company may be particularly focused on making an intimate presentation.
