A rather interesting image has appeared from MacPost (via MacRumors) that appears to show the rear panel for the upcoming iPhone 5. The image shows the rear panel of an iPhone with the internal model number N94 which many believe, as a result of some digging from 9to5Mac, to be the internal model number for the next generation iPhone 5. The images also show that the panel is labelled EVT2 which refers to Engineering Verification Test.
The part appears to be sourced from June 7th, 2011 which, combined with the EVT coding, indicates that this is most likely to be the actual rear panel of the iPhone 5 when it is released. If so, the part appears to verify that the new iPhone will not have a dual, split LED flash. Additionally, and perhaps of even greater significance, it appears that the new device will look essentially very much like the iPhone 4 although it’s hard to confirm from this image.
External iPhone 5 cases from third party case manufacturers had recently suggested a tapered rear panel with design notes similar to the first generation iPad. From this image, this looks to be unlikely.
Given that we are rumored to be only weeks away from the launch of the iPhone 5, it’s likely that more images of the device will appear prior to launch. We have received two unconfirmed tips that an event will be held on September 21st to launch the device but we haven’t managed yet to get any more information on whether this will actually be the case. However, TiPb have placed the public launch of the iPhone 5 at October 7th, so get your wallets ready.
