Unreleased iOS 5 Has Already Been Jailbroken

Given that iOS 5 has only just been released to developers and has not yet been given a public release, you’d be forgiven for assuming that a jailbreak was some way off. Not so, according to Engadget, who are reporting that the hacker team headed up by MuscleNerd has managed to hack the newest version of iOS gaining root access and, as shown by the picture above, have managed to install Cydia on a fourth gen iPod Touch running a build of iOS 5.

It’s not clear yet when the public release of iOS 5 by Apple will actually take place although at the WWDC keynote address yesterday it was announced that it would ship at some time in the fall.  Developers have been seeded with beta builds of the software which has obviously enabled the hacker group to try out their hack, based on the limera1n jailbreak, on the new software.

For those who are interested in jailbreaking their device, it is likely that the iOS 5 limera1n edition (either tethered or untethered) will be released shortly after the public release of iOS 5.  However, the fall release does give Apple quite a bit of time to plug the holes used by the jailbreak software so you may expect a quiet game of cat and mouse to take place between Apple and the jailbreakers between now and the Fall release of iOS 5.

‘Ship’ is an umbrella term.  Better than saying ‘would grace us with its presence’
