Samsung Folding LED Displays Are Amazing; Potential For Apple Use Is Even More So

Following on from the report this morning describing Samsung’s new AMOLED displays, Gizmodo has highlighted a new type of foldable display that could be making its way into consumer electronics very soon (via CultofMac). While this doesn’t strictly have anything to do with Apple, iPhones, iPods or iPads quite yet, the technology is simply amazing and it is mind-boggling to think about what Apple could do with it.

The new AMOLED displays can be folded without any visible crease in the center of the fold due to the fact that they are made of a two AMOLED displays mounted on a super-elastic silicone formulation that can be creased with a very small hinge and therefore stored in in a pocket.  Imagine an iPad that can be folded in half and stored in your back pocket but with no crease or loss of image down the center when it is opened up again.

While Apple don’t have any flip devices in their line-up at the moment, it is fascinating to think about what they could do with this technology.  With Samsung designing such innovative displays, hopefully a long-term partnership with Apple can once again change the way consumers think about their smartphones and tablets.  And it needn’t stop there; how about flexible curved AMOLED screen on an iPod that can be wrapped around the wrist, essentially tailored to the person using it.

Again, we have to stress that there has been no word that Apple is even interested in using this type of technology but it’s so cool that even the thought of it appearing in an Apple product is awesome.
