Rumor: ‘iPhone 4S’ Arriving In September 2011

The next generation iPhone, apparently called the iPhone 4S, will be arriving in September with an A5 processor, better cameras and HSPA+ support, according to a new report from Forbes which quotes Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek (via MacRumors).  The report suggests that the new device will be much like the current iPhone 4 but with a few cosmetic changes improving it over the original.  The new device will also apparently be launched on the T-Mobile, Sprint and China Mobile networks.

The report doesn’t add anything which hasn’t already been discussed about the next generation of the iPhone but does lend credence to the lack of 4G compatibility in the next iPhone.  Tim Cook, Apple COO, has intimated as much on multiple occasions stating that the current generation 4G chipsets required design compromises in the iPhone which Apple weren’t willing to make.

The ‘iPhone 4S’ name initially came from a report by 9to5Mac which suggested that Apple was seeding prototype devices to key developers for testing.  It is unclear if this analyst has simply picked up on that name from the report or if he was independently able to confirm the identity of the next generation device.

HSPA+ is faster than 3G but slower than true 4G but would provide Apple with an interim solution to the fast moving issue of ’4G versus not-4G’

Like I expected, though I’m a bit disappointed in the September time-frame.

My theory was, come June/July, we would see the iPhone 4S with an underclocked dual-core A5, more memory, and HSPA+ (for those using GSM).  The “next generation” iPhone (ie, iPhone 5) will be redesigned to remove the (perceived) antenna problem, support LTE, NFC and possibly low-energy bluetooth.

I’ll be curious to see if Apple does a version for Sprint and T-Mobile, or if they can make one model which will work on popular GSM network frequencies (AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) and one model that will work on popular CDMA frequencies (Verizon, Sprint, etc.).

How come no mention of Near Field Communications? Is this not being included anymore? NFC was the one thing that “would change everything all over again”

Several Android handsets already have NFC, so how would Apple having it “change everything all over again”????

I’ll be skipping this one if all it’s getting are these rumored upgrades. Very underwhelming.

      Not impressed then?

Sprint?! Don’t tease us now!  Hope it’s true!

It’s an analyst report – it must be true :)
