A new 10.1″ LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels will apparently be shown off by Samsung next week and rumors are beginning to circulate that this LCD could bring the so-called Retina Display to the next generation of iPads, possibly first appearing in the iPad 3 (via TUAW). The display is expected to become available in the later half of the year and has a pixel density in excess of 300dpi which is the cut off point for the Apple Retina Display (the point at which the human eye cannot disguish individual pixels).
The iPad 2 had initially be rumored to be receiving a Retina Display but these rumors were quickly quashed in advance of, and at, the launch of the device. The major concerns with implementing a Retina Display in the iPad are likely to be the cost and the power draw, both of which Apple would likely want to overcome to maintain their current standards i.e. a $499 base model and a 10 hour battery.
The new display from Samsung (press release here) apparently draws 40% less power than would otherwise be expected from a display of this calibre which may go some way to preventing too much loss of battery life. However, the cost of the screen has not yet been released which could potentially have an impact on the initial price point of the iPad 3.
