Boom is a rather spiffy volume booster app for the Mac that goes all the way up to 11. You may ask, Why not make 10 the loudest? Well, this app goes up to 11. And it does so in a rather elegant way. While your Mac speakers may be adequate for most things, I’ve sometimes found myself watching a movie through Quicktime on my MacBook Air when on the road, and simply wishing that there was a way to boost the volume a little. And this is where Boom comes in.
Boom is a fantastic little app that sits on your Mac and allows you to boost your volume up to 11. It can be set to open on login and sits unobtrusively in your menu bar allowing you to use it when necessary. I found it particularly useful when listening to music through my MacBook Air speakers rather than earphones which tend to have adequate volume already. However, I’ve found myself using it a lot more than I expected because the app also includes a really nifty one click equaliser allowing you to customize your listening experience. So much so, that it is now one of the few apps that I have set for automatic opening whenever I start my Mac.
The app provides you with an extra slider bar which sits next to your volume control in the menu bar. If you already have the volume cranked up to max, then just slide your pointer an inch to the left and crank it up further. Awesome. And if you want to customize it through the built in equaliser, it’s only one more click away. It couldn’t be more simple. the user interface has been carefully designed to offer a clean, Apple-like look that fits in perfectly with OS X. You can also assign hotkeys which is great when working on a blog post. One other feature which is worth noting is the ability to boost the audio output of specific movie and sound files simply by dragging them onto an area in the interface.
Being honest, I know that Boom sounds like such a simple app but it is so well implemented that once you get it, you won’t want to give it up. You can try it out for 7 days free by visiting the Boom website, and the full app is available for purchase for $8.99. A bargain, all thing considered, since you will end up using it every single time you fire up your Mac. It is simply too good not to have. It’s only available for purchase from the Boom website at the moment, but the publisher Global Delight, assures me that they are hoping to have it on the Mac App Store soon.
Here’s the best bit…we have four copies of the full version of Boom to give away to our lucky readers. And don’t worry about any complicated faffing about with competition entries and the like. All you have to do is make sure that you are following us on Twitter by 3pm EST on Friday 15th April 2011. If you are already following us then you are already ridiculously awesome, but we will pick four winners at that time.
If you don’t win, get it anyway. It’s frickin great.
