We have a received a tip from a AppleBitch reader that one Apple Retail Store has offered free Smart Covers to customers who had been waiting in line for hours for an iPad 2 delivery which never came. The store, located in Charlotte, NC, apparently told customers the previous day that an iPad 2 delivery was due for the following morning. However, when no iPads arrived, the customers in line, around fifty of them, were apparently offered a free Smart Cover by the Manager as an apology for the mis-information.
Many people who elected to try their luck with securing the incredibly popular iPad 2 at a retail store rather than ordering online have experienced long queues for very limited stocks of the device. While Apple has previously offered free bumpers for the iPhone 4, iIt is extremely unlikely that free Smart Covers are going to be commonplace for shoppers waiting in line for the iPad 2. As it is, you can always try your luck with retail staff, but don’t expect anything as this was probably an isolated case, which was a great gesture by staff if it was indeed true.
We did get a similar tip from another reader although we couldn’t get back in touch to confirm either the story or the location of the store. Additionally, Apple didn’t get back to us with a comment. Since we are only able to confirm this story with one person, please take note of the caveats that accompany this.
