We’ve had a tip to say that Amazon.com appear to be stocking a neoprene armband case for a 320 GB iPod Classic. This is unusual because the current maximum capacity of the iPod Classic is 160GB. It’s caught our attention because we reported last month that stocks of the iPod classic were beginning to fluctuate, prompting speculation that the device was about to be updated or discontinued.
We’re not sure how long this case has been on Amazon, but were are a little skeptical of the possibility of a 320GB iPod. This would suggest the use of a dual platter hard drive, something that Apple moved away from in favor of single platter drives when implementing the current 160GB model.
Toshiba recently released a single platter 220GB 1.8 inch drive which was expected to be the next drive used in the iPod line but no updates to the iPod Classic line have appeared just yet. However, with the iPod Touch maxing out at 64GB, Apple may be choosing to go big with their update to the iPod Classic, potentially reverting to dual platter hard drives.
It is worth noting that iPod Classic stocks in third party resellers are still extremely low; Amazon is showing 2-4 weeks shipping, MacMall are out of stock, Target are out of stock, Best Buy are backordered on the black model and no longer shipping the silver model, and J & R are out of stock. The only seller with a good selection appears to be Apple itself.
