Rumor: iPod Classic Getting A Storage Bump To 320GB?

We’ve had a tip to say that Amazon.com appear to be stocking a neoprene armband case for a 320 GB iPod Classic.  This is unusual because the current maximum capacity of the iPod Classic is 160GB.  It’s caught our attention because we reported last month that stocks of the iPod classic were beginning to fluctuate, prompting speculation that the device was about to be updated or discontinued.

We’re not sure how long this case has been on Amazon, but were are a little skeptical of the possibility of a 320GB iPod.  This would suggest the use of a dual platter hard drive, something that Apple moved away from in favor of single platter drives when implementing the current 160GB model.

Toshiba recently released a single platter 220GB 1.8 inch drive which was expected to be the next drive used in the iPod line but no updates to the iPod Classic line have appeared just yet. However, with the iPod Touch maxing out at 64GB, Apple may be choosing to go big with their update to the iPod Classic, potentially reverting to dual platter hard drives.

It is worth noting that iPod Classic stocks in third party resellers are still extremely low; Amazon is showing 2-4 weeks shipping, MacMall are out of stock, Target are out of stock, Best Buy are backordered on the black model and no longer shipping the silver model, and J & R are out of stock.  The only seller with a good selection appears to be Apple itself.

is anybody from apple is reading this, you have a lot of people WANTING a 320gb ipod.  please, please, please make a 320gb ipod classic.  I have 2 160gb, one for music, and one for movies.  It would be great to just have one.  thanks so much.

Oh yes!. Many still uses ipod classic. It’s the best music player apple has ever made. It’s even easy to operate when it’s in the pocket.

BRING IT APPLE, i have 300 gb of music, and this would be the shizle, i would buy that along with a 128 gb ipod touch, for video….as resolution increases, so does the file size!!!

pls ppl still buying/using ipod classic?

    • jt

Of course they do. Contrary to its counterpart, the iPod Classic also works as a robust, portable hard drive. I happen to have too much music that will not fit into an iPod touch, so I get to have my music and a portable HD.

iPod classic: 160GB. iPod Touch: merely 64GB. Meh.

Of course we do. There’s something very nice about bringing ALL your music and podcasts to the office and listen to whatever you want – rather than picking and choosing playlists to put on one of the smaller ipods

I’d give my left toe for a 320 GB iPod Classic

    • timrobson

      Which one?

  • Bob

Toshiba is the only company that makes 1.8-inch hard drives anymore, and they in fact only make one dual-platter drive coming in at 240 GB (MK2431GAH).

That would make it a little difficult to make a 320GB iPod then :)

      • http://www.applebitch.com Chris

They might use a Toshiba 2.5 inch 320GB although that would be a chunky iPod

        • tom

@Bob, they dont only make the 1 hard drive as the rumours started about igger capacity after they released a 220gb 1.8 hdd plus a load of duel ones for things like macbook airs and netbooks.

@chris um wtf lol just in case anyone takes that serious this will never happen as it would make it the size of an archos lol

I really dont thing this artical is correct i believ the amazon page is a misstype and should be 120 as that model is missing from the list. I do however really hope the 220 is on the way for personal reasons. Im waiting on one as a free gift from a mobile phone and if they bring out the new one then my wait due to low stock would be worth it :)
