Tenuous Rumor; Apple iPad 2 And iWork ’11 Event On February 2nd

The date of an announcement regarding the iPad 2 has recently been rumored to be scheduled on February 9th.  While 9to5Mac has an infinitely better record of predictions than us, we are going to stick our necks out once again and argue that it is actually going to take place on February 2nd. The reasons for this are listed below, but please note that this is purely speculation on a Friday afternoon.

Venue: The Moscone Center is free from the 30th Jan – 5th Feb. The Moscone is booked for Feb 9th which is the date that has been thrown about for a possible announcement. An announcement of this magnitude would require a big venue. It should also be noted that the Yerba Buena Center is free on this date as well, although this mid-sized venue would probably not be used for the announcement.

Marketing: February 2nd is of course 2/2/11 – the first 2 is the iPad 2, the 11 is of course iWork ’11 and the other 2, well, we haven’t figured that one out yet (probably the Magic Mouse 2 or signifying that the iPad is taking a big number 2 on its competition).

Timing: The day before the Verizon iPhone is released for pre-order, Apple will hold this event announcing two exciting products, among them an iPad 2 that is compatible with the Verizon and AT&T networks.

Significance: Dell is rumored to be planning on holding an event to launch the Dell Streak tablet on T-Mobile on the 2nd Feb. Apple would surely love to upstage them. Additionally, Sprint is confirmed to be holding a mystery event on Feb 7th and HP is confirmed to be holding a Web OS event on Feb 9th, perhaps to introduce a tablet device. They are going to fall pretty flat once people see how good the iPad 2 is beforehand.

Event Name – It’s going to be a play on the word ‘two’

How much is wrong with this? Almost everything.

Venue – If the venue is booked on the 9th, and not on the 2nd, wouldn’t it make more sense that the 9th is the day for the release of the iPad 2?

Marketing – This seems to me like a bunch of nonsense stretched to make a point that has nothing else going for it.

Timing – February 9th is the day before the Verizon iPhone comes out, not the 2nd. And the original iPad is already on both networks? Apple isn’t holding out for an event to announce anything about the iPhone coming to Verizon because they’ve already made the announcement.

Significance – I think it would make more sense for Apple to hold their event after the announcement of these other products because then they can steal the thunder from these groups. If it’s announcement came first, it may be overshadowed by something announced later. The later it’s introduced, the fresher it is in consumer’s minds.

Event Name – Good try. But this holds no more validity than me saying it will be released on February 22nd because then the number would be 2/22/2011. Besides, the Mac event most likely has something more in store for itself than JUST the announcement of the iPad 2.

      Hi Dylan

Venue – the Moscone is booked by another company (the MPINCC FYI). Kind of scuppers your point.
Timing – for pre-orders it’s the 3rd. And the iPad is not yet compatible on Verizon’s network since it requires a mobile hotspot to get acccess. The latest rumors are pointing towards a hybrid iPad 2 with AT&T/Verizon compatibility.
      Significance – not with Apple
Event name – yes – hence the iWork reference
