Several sites have today posted leaked photos of plastic and silicone cases that are apparently destined to be used with the iPad 2 (the one above is from Shenzhen MacTop Electronics). The most interesting thing about these pictures is that pictures of cases from different sources show the same changes to the structure of the iPad 2.
The large gap to the left of the space left for docking port has been described by MacRumors as large enough for an SD card slot. Admittedly, this would be an incredibly strange choice for Apple as it would have fairly limited functionality. To be honest, it’s not the first thing that we would assume a larger hole would be used for.
We would hypothesize that the large hole is either for an upgraded speaker set or perhaps a combination speaker & mini-USB port since many of the previous rumors have suggested that the iPad 2 would incorporate this type of functionality. However, given the rather random inclusion of an SD card port on the new MacBook Air, you never know what to expect.
At least we’ll find out soon enough.
